Black Dyke Band - conductors Drs. Nicholas and Robert Childs

This CD is a must for all Gregson fans. Doyen have been excellent in recording all the Brass Band works of Gregson and this is Volume 5. The band for this recording is the exceptional Black Dyke Mills Band, conducted by Robert and Nicholas Childs.

The first work is the recent Test Piece at the Nationals at the Albert Hall (October 2013) titled OF DISTANT MEMORIES, which was tremendously popular with the audience of the day, with many fine performances achieved. This work tries to recall in modern terms the early days of the Brass Band Test Piece, in particular, LABOUR AND LOVE by Percy Fletcher. It was commissioned jointly by the National Youth Bands of Great Britain and Wales. The band gives a very detailed and expressive performance.

This is followed by Brett Baker as outstanding soloist in the TROMBONE CONCERTO, which is at last available in a version for Brass Band.

ROCOCO VARIATIONS next with some thrilling exceptional playing, and then SYMPHONY in TWO MOVEMENTS is the final work with a superlative performance. Both conductors and the band are to be congratulated on producing an album of such quality.
