Glen Van Looy has established himself as a prominent soloist and band musician. This, his second solo CD, is based around new material and he teams up with Alan Withington and the Manger Band in Norway to produce a fascinating mix of pieces to suit many tastes, but, it has to be said heading more toward modern styles.

The first work is a fairy tale in musical terms titled ONCE UPON A TIME, a three movement concerto by Steven Verheist. This has a light hearted feel in many ways, reminiscent of Lloyd Webber, with extremely demanding writing for the soloist.

ORISON is a multi tracked piece for Euphonium and creates some fascinating textures. This is followed by KJEDEN (Chains) by Paul McGhee, a substantial and very modern work, which features many unusual sounds, superbly recreated by the band, which are also very accessible.

HARRY’S SONG by Peter Meechan is a beautiful work, being the second movement of a concerto – ORIGINS, celebrating the birth of Mark Bousie’s son.

UPHILL by Stan Nieuwenhuis tell the story of Somalian athlete Samia Yusuf Omar, and the final item is an unusual and atmospheric arrangement of ABIDE WITH ME by Paul McGhee.

Van Looy’s talent on the Euphonium is astounding and this is a very attractive album.
Favourite track is track 5 - KJEDEN (Chains) by Paul McGhee
