In the composer’s own words: The ‘Third Suite” is a tuneful work for band, yet it has built into it certain elements that provide a challenge for the players and conductor as well as added interest for the listener. In the first movement, for example, the steady feel and rhythm of a march are somewhat distorted by measures of unequal time values. One interesting aspect of this “March” is a percussion solo near the middle of the movement.
It is a delight to finally offer this distinguished and time-honored band classic in a practical arrangement with younger players in mind. Although the diminished technical demands at this level have dictated some specific and broad changes, the original style, intent and musical color of the work have been maintained.
NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR
Even though this is a march that is written in a somewhat unorthodox style, a general martial quality should still be observed throughout with confident playing encouraged. Dynamic levels from p to if are utilized and must be religiously observed in order to heighten the emotional impact. Work for an even and gradual crescendo in measures 43 through 48, as well as in measures 51 through 56. Accents must not be overdone to the point of obliterating tonal centers. Care should be taken not to clip the eighth notes too short on the last beats of measures 4, 8, 16, 24 and 30. Quick breaths on the eighth rests will insure that this doesn’t happen.
