Dream Catchers is written in the style of a youth band test piece with lots of jazz and funk influences. The idea behind the piece is that every young musician has a chance of "catching" their dreams by performing to as high a standard as they can. In the first section of Dream Catchers the performers are required to use their technical ability with lots of intricate playing, whereas in the dream-like middle section they play with beauty and style.
Written for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain.
Dream Catchers is a test piece for bands with the added test that all the soloists where marked need to stand at the front of the band to perform their solos. The composer has made suggestions as to which soloist should play the solos for example Flugel Horn and Cornet to start. However, the conductor can choose which soloists play the marked solos throughout the piece. The only rule that must be observed is that where a Bb. Instrument is indicated to play the solo, it must be a Bb. instrument - and the same with Eb. instruments.
