Caelidh composed by Rodney Newton in 1999 was commissioned by Robert & Lorraine Childs and given as an eighteenth birthday present to their euphonium playing son David. The work was premiered by David and the Brighouse & Rastrick Band back in Huddersfield Town Hall in 1999. Caelidh (Ceilidh) can be spelled in various ways and is a traditional Gaelic Social Dance. Following a brief lament this solo certainly flies into Gaelic dance mode quickening in tempo right to the finish!
Caelidh can be heard performed by David Childs on two commercial recordings: Prodigy (Doyen CD1O4) accompanied by Brighouse & Rastrick, and Celtic Charm (Doyen CD214) accompanied by the Cory Band - both of which can be purchased in the CD section of this site.
