This Adagio contains one of Beethoven’s noblest melodies, simple and direct. It is repeated several times, only interrupted by two short contrasted passages, the second of which can easily be cut with only very small adjustments to the score.
The title ‘Pathetique” (‘Tragic’ in English) was forced on Beethoven by his publisher, keen to promote sales of the young composer’s music. The two outer movements of Piano Sonata Opus 1 3 are certainly stormy and dramatic in mood, but this slow movement is a haven of calm.
In this slow movement from Beethoven's best known early piano sonata, calm and sonorous melodies are interspersed with contrasting passages of moderately agitated music.
