Written in 1942 by Aaron Copland. The fanfare was also used as the main theme of the fourth movement of Copland's Third Symphony.

The rock group Emerson Lake and Palmer recorded a version of this piece for their album "Works Volume 12 in 1977 and it became the groups biggest hit when an edited version was released as a single that year.
