Book telling the story of Bickershaw Colliery Band.
DEDICATION
In writing this history of Abram/Bickershaw Band I am mindful of the benefits and friendship bestowed upon me by four particularly close friends and it is to this eminent quartet that I have pleasure in dedicating this book.
Firstly, to my tutor and mentor Mr. William Haydock, for the sound musical training and advice that he imparted to myself and my young colleagues in Wigan Boys’ Club Band.
Secondly, to my administrative mentor Bill Gaskell, former Secretary and later President of Wingates Temperance Band, whose wise counsel was always given willingly and sensibly.
Thirdly, to my good friend jack Wilson, a remarkable man of integrity and strength of character with whom I shared many interesting conversations (many of which I was prudent enough to tape). Jack was a stalwart of the band movement and played with Bickershaw from 1924 to 1947.
Finally, to my friend Harry Mortimer C.B.E., with whom I was in daily contact in his calls from “Harrods to Wigan University”. Up to and including the evening before his demise I was the lucky recipient of his confidences, advice and unique sense of humour which I will never forget.
