COMPOSED FOR BRASS BAND BY BEVERLY ANN STOLL In 1997, all of the students who were undertaking the BA Band Studies Course at Accrington & Rossendale College, were commission by the Slaidburn Band to compose a suitable piece of music to mark its centenary in 1998. As a result of the commission proposals, Beverly Ann Stoll, a third year student, wrote “A Slaidburn Festival overture]’ The work commences with a festival theme which portrays the thriving “Whit-Monday Festival.” This event has taken place in Slaidburn for over 100 years. It is one day in the year, when people travel back to the village of Slaidburn to join with friends and families and in particular, when past members of the band come back to play the famous march “Slaidburn” with the Slaidburn Band, in the village of Slaidburn!
As a tribute to William Rimmer and Joseph Hodgson, the overture briefly features the musical themes of the march “Slaidburn” and the unaffected poignant harmonies of the hymn tune “Burn Fell”.
