Championship Section testpiece.
An English Suite was commissioned jointly by the Brass Band Heritage Trust and the Fodens (Courtois) Band as part of their centennial celebrations in 2000. The work is intended to be played without a break but the three component sections are designed to be used separately in a concert context if wished. The titles of individual sections .(at least in the case of Scherzo and Nocturne) represent a conscious act of homage to Hoist’s A Moorland Suite, one of the earliest of the great innovative twentieth century brass band pieces, dating from 1928. Plymouth Town, the finale, is not a march, as it is in Hoist’s work, but a kind of “English Hoe-Down” in general character.
