Comments by Richard Phillips Reflections in nature is a musical portrayal of the words by the late Colonel Catherine Baird, the verses of which are reproduced here:
When Jesus looked o’er Galilee, So blue and calm and faii Upon her bosom, could he see A cross reflected there?
When sunrise dyed the lovely deeps, And sparkled in his hair, 0 did the light rays seem to say: A crown of thorns he ‘II wear?
When in the hush of eventide, Cool waters touched his feet, Was it a hymn of Calvary’s road He heard the waves repeat?
But when the winds triumphantly Swept from the open plain, The Master surely heard the song: The Lord shall live again!
Colonel Robert Redhead has used the tune Fewster to portray three pictures of the crucifixion and a final triumphant picture of the resurrection of Jesus. Little technical comment is needed as the score is marked with any dynamic or tempi variation. It is important that the melody be heard clearly at all times and that the sound be sustained to the bar lines. Beginning at the interlude between the first two settings of the tune, the syncopated motif heard in the trombones and subsequently in the horns, baritones and euphonium should be sostenuto and lyrical. Through section D, ensure that, despite the increased volume, the character of the hymn tune remains constant to the end.
