Gaudete was first published as a sacred carol in 1582 but its origins are even older. This version is arranged in the style of Pastime with Good Company, combining the ancient melody with modern rhythmic patterns. The irregular rhythms of the setting of the Latin words are put against a regular rock beat and the resultant tension celebrates the meeting of the old and the new.
