Victopr Ewald (1860 - 1935 ) Victor Ewald was one of a group of dilettante Russian composers of whon Borodin, Glazunov, Liadov and Rimsky Korsakav are the best known. With the exception of Tchaikovsky, most 19th. centuary composers were trained for other professions and pursued music on purely an amateur basis. Ewald was a friend of music publisher Belayev and often played the cello in a quartet weith him. His interest to brass players is that he composed three brass quintets ( opus 7 is the last one of the three ) written in the 19th. Century romantic style, thus providing us with some original music to bridge the gap in our repertoire between classical and contemporary times.
Ewald wrote mostly for strings, and his brsss music is very much in the mould of string music. Therefore, in the performance of this quintet, it is desireable to seek a light cantabile style, with a degree of rubato in the melodic lines supported by a subtle accompaniment.
