Gwent Rhapsody was written initially for the Gwent Youth Band.
It portrays the past and the future of the area. On the one hand, the Castles and Abbeys, a feature of the landscape, and a reminder of the past — and on the other, Youth — a bubbling, energetic portent, of the future. The opening bars are of a meditative nature, symbolic of the monks’ plainsong. This however, is punctuated by trumpet calls, albeit in the distance, a grim reminder of the impending dissolution. The music gives way to Alla Marcia — the hostile army is marching The inevitable conflict follows, and many Abbeys lay in ruins. However, there is a future, and a bubbling Presto follows, telling us in whimsical terms that Youth is an on—going age. The nature of this music changes — a look backwards, perhaps, to the precious heritage of Gwent — and it brings a return to the initial theme, peaceful, with the trumpet interjections growing weaker, and finally coming to rest on a quiet concord.
