Surprisingly the Pel Mel began life back in 1963 as a trumpet study. Howarth then principal trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was touring the U.S.A. when he met Mel Broils, assistant principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Orchestra. Mel gave Howarth some studies he had recently written and Howarth returned the favour. Howarth’s study forms the main melodic line in Pel Mel.
