Although there are few records of the songs sung by slaves asthey labored, it was not until 1868, when William Francis Allen published a collection of spirituals, that a more complete documentation appeared. This book started a flood of enthusiasm for spirituals that was deepened in the 1870’s through the efforts of the “Jubilee Singers” of Fisk University in the United States.
“Jubilation!” (a time of celebration) Lises the spiritual, “My Lord, What A Morning”, as the lead melody for transitions and modulations throughout and to introduce four popular spirituals: “I’m Gonna Sing”, “Steal Away”, “Ev’ry Time I Feel The Spirit” and “My Lord, What A Morning”.
