Composed for the National Championships in 1957 - a landmark work for one of England's greatest composers. A theme and eleven variations are well contrasted but linked to form one continuous work.
Variations of special interest include the fourth, headed "Cannon", variation seven "Arabesque" in which a constant stream of semiquavers embellishes the main melodic line. Variation eight is marked "Alla Polacca" - in the style of a Polonaise, while variation ten is marked "Fugato" - in the style of a Fugue.
The final variation "Chorale" leads to a restatement of the Theme and references to some of the earlier variations.
