Set as the First Section Testpiece for the National Finals in the Albert Hall, London - October 2000.
Dedicated to and written at the invitation of Bram Gay.
FRONTIER! was written mainly in the summer of 1984 following the invitation of Bram Gay to write a substantial contest piece and vehicle for band display. The work is an attempt to capture the op en-air American pioneer spirit.
Although played without a break, it naturally divides into an overall three-movement structure. An assertive opening movement with plenty of lively melodic interest, colour and rhythmic vitality, is followed by a lazy, bluesy, middle section (but not without some energy and wit), culminating in a no-nonsense finale.
MB.
The percussion part requires two players, as follows:
1. Side drum, sizzle cymbal and suspended cymbal, triangle, claves, xylophone (optional).
