The title of the work refers to a legendary imaginary purple flower, mysterious in that it never fades or dies. In an extended single movement the music explores the colours and textures of the band.

Amaranth was commissioned by Sandwell Youth Band, conductor Keith Watts, and first performed by them in West Bromwich Town Hall in May 1989. In 1992 it was selected as the third section testpiece for the finals of the Boosey & Hawkes National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Percussion requirements:
Timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal, crash cymbals, glockenspiel, triangle, tambourine.
