Slate, Sea and Skyfeatures a musical landscape and journey in three integrated and continuous sections, led by the cornet soloist alongside ensembles broadly representing the title's elements: ‘slate’ (flugelhorn, tenor horns and trombones); ‘sea’ (baritones, euphoniums and basses) and ‘sky’ (comets). These alternate throughout with the full band, travelling towards
and through a storm, and emerging into bright skies at the end.
The title Slate, Sea and Sky is inspired by Norman Bissell's evocative poem of the same name, found in a book of poetry given to me by a close friend, to whom the work is dedicated.

Howard Snell writes :
FANTASY for Cornet was first performed under its original title of ‘Kenwood Carol’ by John Hudson and the Britannia Building Society Band, with the Composer conducting at the Kenwood Concert Bowl in London in June 1988. Fantasy was commissioned by Michael Webber on behalf of English Heritage and dedicated to the memory of the Composer’s father. Fantasy mirrors the progress of the seasons from early Spring to the coming of Summer. In the latter stages of the work the composer introduces the mediaeval English round which starts with the words "Sumer is a-cumen in, Lhude sing cuckoo". The Fantasy is available both with Brass Band and Piano accompaniment. N.B. The Piano version is not an exact replica of the Brass Band score, but, in many details, has been re-composed in order to offer a valid pianistic equivalent to the original.
Solo for Cornet OR Vibraphone and Brass Band.

"Daisy" is a toy poodle, and a "Diva" !
Andante & Vivo for Daisy Dog was composed for my daughter Marie’s dog, Daisy, who is a toy poodle and a diva. The first three notes the trumpet plays in the Andante, C, Ab and Bb, form the basis for the whole piece. The Vivace, influenced by the French composer Bozza, is a fast version of what we heard in the Andante. The middle section which has the trumpeter playing four groups of triplets, each group higher and louder, is a sort of badinage between the trumpet and piano. A recapitulation of the earlier Vivace theme is followed by ascending and descending passages in the whole tone scale which is shared between the trumpet and piano and which ultimately brings the piece to an exciting end.
