Sand and Stars illustrates the journey of the aviator-writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry when he attempted to break the record for a Paris-Saigon flight. Having started as planned, the journey ended prematurely in the heart of the Sahara with a broken plane and the rescue, just in time, of the pilot and his navigator. Written in six parts, this highly colourful piece varies between a mysterious atmosphere, the deafening noise of a plane hitting the ground and the vivacity of an Arabic dance, punctuated with cornet and euphonium solos, before concluding with spectacular musical fireworks.

Introduction to the book : Welcome to Scoring & Arranging for Brass Band. Since the 1970’s there has been a worldwide explosion in the popularity of the British-style brass band. This has transformed what was once viewed by some as a parochial British working class institution into an internationally recognised brass ensemble.
As well as in the UK there are now British-style brass bands established in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the USA, as well as in other countries. The modern brass band has an immense and ever growing repertoire of music. Amongst this are excellent original works by Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, John Ireland and by many more modem composers. Most of the repertoire however consists of arrangements of music not originally written for brass band.
This book is designed as a guide for someone who wishes to begin scoring and arranging for brass band for the first time. From arranging a four part hymn tune to arranging more complex orchestral music the book offers step by step advice to help with many of the problems encountered by a new arranger and gives advice on the copyright law and publishing.
My experience as both a player and conductor in brass bands and as a professional orchestral player introduced me to a great deal of wonderful music which has shaped my own ideas on scoring and arranging. Having worked professionally as a brass band arranger for several years I have put these ideas and thoughts into this book.
I hope that you enjoy this book and Fmd its contents to be useful and informative, and I hope that you are encouraged to take your scoring and arranging for brass band further. Andrew Duncan. August 2005.

Programme notes
Slate, Sea and Skyfeatures a musical landscape and journey in three integrated and continuous sections, led by the cornet soloist alongside ensembles broadly representing the title's elements: ‘slate’ (flugelhorn, tenor horns and trombones); ‘sea’ (baritones, euphoniums and basses) and ‘sky’ (comets). These alternate throughout with the full band, travelling towards
and through a storm, and emerging into bright skies at the end.
The title Slate, Sea and Sky is inspired by Norman Bissell's evocative poem of the same name, found in a book of poetry given to me by a close friend, to whom the work is dedicated.
Category: MARCHES Composer: John Philip Sousa Arranger: Philip Littlemore
The patriotic American march The Stars And Stripes Forever is the official National March of the United States of America, as decreed by a 1987 act of the U.S. Congress. It is probably Sousa’s most famous composition. While on vacation in Europe with his wife, Sousa received word that his good friend and band manager, David Blakely, had died. Sousa quickly returned to the States aboard the S.S. Teutonic, and whilst aboard he began to form the music that was to become this most famous march. According to Sousa’s autobiography, Marching On, he composed the majority of the work on Christmas Day 1896: “I did not transfer a note of that music to paper while I was on the steamer, but when we reached shore, I set down the measures that my brain had been playing for me, and not a note of it has ever changed”. For twenty-five years Sousa’s Band played the march at almost every concert it held.
