TURBULENCE, TIDE and TORQUE - Parts & Score
Available £69.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - Baritone
Composer: Peter Graham

Turbulence, Tide and Torque can be considered to be a companion piece to my 2008 Euphonium Concerto In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen, and indeed can be performed on Euphonium (vintage or medium bore instrument preferred). Whereas the gentlemen in question in the latter work were fictional (e.g. Sherlock Holmes and Phileas Fogg), the former pays tribute to three real life women who were very much true pioneers and heroines of their age.

Turbulence: Harriet Quimby (b. 1875) was one of the world's best woman aviators, her significant and historic achievement being the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Sadly, in her lifetime very few people were aware of her 1912 accomplishment; potential press coverage was dominated by the sinking of The Titanic only two days before.

Grace Darling (b. 1815) is a name much more familiar to the public today, and in her lifetime she was lauded as a national heroine. A humble lighthouse keeper's daughter from Northumberland, her participation in the rescue of survivors from the wrecked paddle-steamer Forfarshire is well documented (a museum dedicated to her achievements located in Bamburgh, the town of her birth). This movement, Tide, develops a main theme from my large scale work Harrison's Dream, reflecting on the souls lost in the disaster.

The final movement Torque, opens with a sudden gear change such as might have been undertaken by Dorothy Levitt (b. 1882), the woman's world land speed record holder, in her Napier racing car. Levitt, who following her 1906 record-breaking achievement was described as the Fastest Girl on Earth, went on to write extensively about her experiences, encouraging females to take up motoring through her articles in The Graphic newpaper.

Turbulence, Tide and Torque was commissioned by and is dedicated to Katrina Marzella as part of an Arts Council of England funded residency I was awarded with the Black Dyke Band in 2018.

TURING TEST, The - Parts & Score
Available £148.00

Categories: TEST PIECES (Major Works), NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Simon Dobson

Grade 6.0
Duration 19.45

Alan Turing is considered the father of modern computational science and much, if not all, of our modern computer technology and the connectivity that we now take for granted is born of the work of this one great, but troubled man. His famous test was designed to prove whether artificial intelligence (AI) could successfully imitate human thought. The single movement of The Turing Test is essentially non-programmatic, but it does seek to show something of the emotion and colour of Turing’s life in its different sections. The composer employs bi-tonality and complex rhythms to show opposing worlds colliding. At the end of each test, we must decide: has true AI been born?

TWM SION CATI - Euphonium Solo - Parts & Score
Available £24.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - Euphonium
Composer: Rodney Newton

Twm Siôn Cati is a figure in Welsh folklore often described as the Welsh Robin Hood. The hills and valleys around Tregaron were once the playing fields of Twm, highwayman, thief and prankster, whose exploits were legendary throughout South Wales.  A handsome man of many faces, he could swap between the fine robes of a gentleman and the rags of a peasant to suit his mischievous deeds.  This new composition by Rodney Newton depicts Twm being pursued on horseback having taken from the rich before giving to the poor!

Twm Siôn Cati is dedicated to David Childs and it can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (DOYCD214) on which the performers are David Childs and Cory Band.

UKRAINIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM - Parts & Score

All proceeds ( 100% ) from the sale of this arrangement are being donated to the Ukrainian Appeal.

‘Shche ne vmerla Ukrainas’, the national anthem of Ukraine, has just one verse and one chorus – but it remains one of the world’s mightiest patriotic songs.

It was formally adopted less than three decades ago, following the country’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

While formally known as the ‘State Anthem of Ukraine’, it also goes by its native title
‘Shche ne vmerla Ukrainy’, which translates into English as ‘Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished’.

The lyrics to Ukraine’s national anthem in English

The glory and freedom of Ukraine has not yet perished
Luck will still smile on us brother-Ukrainians.
Our enemies will die, as the dew does in the sunshine,
and we, too, brothers, we'll live happily in our land.

We’ll not spare either our souls or bodies to get freedom
and we’ll prove that we brothers are of Kozak kin.

Composer: Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Feature for Euphonium and Eb.Bass duet.

Programme Notes

"Under the Sunset" was composed to celebrate the 60“ birthday of Euphonium player Mick Cartlidge. It has been composed as a duet for Euphonium and E-flat Bass which are the instruments played by both Mick and his wife Ruth who commissioned the piece. The piece is a lovely slow melody that features our two main instruments. It begins with both soloists taking turns in playing the opening main theme. As the piece develops the music transposes in key and the two soloists play a combination of the main theme, harmony and counter melody. This duet is a lovely tranquil piece that allows the soloists to enjoy their lyrical playing to the full.

VALDRES MARCH - Parts & Score
Available £62.95

Categories: MARCHES, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Johannes Hanssen
Arranger: John Philip Hannevik

Grade 3.5
Duration 3.45

Valdres is a mountain region that lies between Oslo and Bergen. Johannes Hanssen (1874-1967) composed the march for the Valdres Battalion between 1901 and 1904, using the Battalions horn-signal combined with a traditional style folk-tune.
The march has been named “one of the greatest marches in the world” on many occasions, and it is a firm favourite with it’s national flavor and unusual style.

This version is similar to Johannes Hanssens revised version for Wind Band from 1954. However, it is interesting to notice that in Hanssens very first version of the march half a century earlier, the first theme was played by the Eb-Cornet, just like in this arrangement for brass band.

Composer: P.I. Tschaikovsky
Arranger: Eric Wilson

Taken from the composer's Six Pieces for Piano Opus 51, this charming melody is well suited to the mellifluous charms of the euphonium.

This arrangement lies perfectly within the instrument's range and provides an ideal encore, allowing the soloist to make the most of its lyrical style.

Supplied with parts for soloist in bass clef or B-flat treble clef

VENGENCE - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Category: NEW & RECENT Publications
Arranger: Cai Isfryn

Tonnau'r Cawr (Vengeance) is the first in a series of compositions for Brass Bands by Cai Isfryn, based on the tale from Welsh mythology of Branwen, the Welsh goddess of love.

During this segment of the tale, Bendigeidfran (Branwen's brother) finds out about his sister's mistreatment at the hands of her husband, Matholwch, king of Ireland.  This is represented by the thunderous opening chords, which break out into a fast paced romp, underlined by the ostinato phrase by the back row as Bendigeidfran gathers the Welsh army ready to rescue his sister.  As the tension builds, Bendigeidfran suddenly hears Branwen's cry for help clear in his mind, represented by the off-stage cornet piece.  This sets the scene for the closing section as we hear Bendigeidfran's army approaching Ireland, preparing for war in order to free their princess.

"When I set out to arrange these traditional Christmas carols I was determined that they should not be yet another run-of-the-mill, strophic, verse-by-verse version of our Christmas musical heritage.

Scored for Brass Ensemble, Organ and Percussion, I have tried to treat each carol as the basis for a "Petite Fantasie" - a continuous, single-movement of variations on the original tune. To what extent I have been successful is for the listener to decide.

Of course, the carol is heard in its traditional form at some point during the arrangement but hopefully the appeal of the carol is enhanced without destroying the traditional concept.

Such treatment obviously involves a considerable amount of original composition. Ding Dong Merrily and In Dulci Jubilo(à 7) both have fugal counterpoint in the middle sections. There is a flavour of monastic plainsong in O Come Emmanuel which is in sharp contrast to the variation featuring Bongos, which immediately follows! Hark the Herald starts with a majestic introduction and ends with a French-style organ toccata. Good King Wenceslas gets the spiky/witty treatment. O Come all Ye Faithful and the First Noel both end in Baroque splendour. The Holly and the Ivy has a Polonaise/Beguine-like section, Jingle Bells an intricate, cross-rhythm against the tune. White Christmas, Silent Night and the middle sections of Hark the Herald and Christmas is Coming have the soft "lush" treatment. Christmas is Coming has a humorous opening and a "Noblimente" end. The Twelve Days of Christmas depicts each "day" with its own theme, e.g. Seven Swans a'Swimming misquotes "The Swan" of Saint Saens. I Saw Three Ships becomes a Gigue while the Coventry Carol and Veni, Veni, Emmanuel inevitably are modal. All in all, a delightful mixture of musical styles through the ages."
