Solo for Bb. Trumpet/ Cornet & Band.
EXCURSONS Program Notes Excursions was written for symphonic band in 1995 and transcribed for brass band in 1999. In its symphonic form it has been preformed and recorded by The United States Air Force Band; it has been preformed often by college and university bands in the United States, Europe and Australia. The brass band version has been recorded by The New York Staff Band of the Salvation Army and received performances in the United States and Europe. The following liner notes, written by Master Sergeant Gregory Brown, is reproduced through the courtesy of The United States Air Force Band and may be found in the CD titled Excursions, which was recently released by that band:
Although not literally a programmatic piece, Excursions is based upon a tune that wanders in and out of various musical situations. After a short introduction by the soloist, the main theme is presented over a lightly ambling accompaniment. The theme travels this way and that, running into some interesting diversions along the way and eventually meeting itself where it began - - at the introduction. Angular melodies and driving rhythms characterize the piece, permeating the various musical situations” through which the trumpet leads the band. Broughton masterfully uses fragments of the opening thematic material — including wide leaps, syncopations and a rising 16th note figure — in countless new combinations.
Lyrical Bb.Cornet Solo.
Another Christmas arrangement of the traditional English tune 'Greensleeves'. It takes the form of a solo for Bb cornet, intentionally written to be well within the ability range of most players, yet providing plenty of scope for musical lyricism.
Tenor Horn Solo - Kenneth Downie - band accompaniment
This tricky solo, commissioned for Sheona White to feature on her Voice of the Tenor Horn album, will provide a challenge to all aspiring soloists on this instrument. Exploring fully the wide range of the instrument and full of rhythm and jaunty humour.

The Bells of Peover is a beautiful and lyrical cornet solo, conjuring up a pastoral scene with the distant ringing of church bells. The piece is named after a pub in the Cheshire village of Lower Peover, near Knutsford.

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto was written in 1953/4 in response to an invitation to compose a work for the Golden Jubilee of the London Symphony Orchestra. Vaughan Williams was by then in is eighty-second year. The lively, outer movements both conclude with extended cadenzas, while the beautifully lyrical Romanza is Vaughan Williams at his best. Phillip Littlemore’s brass band arrangement is a welcome addition to the brass band repertoire.
