A SUMMER OVERTURE

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice and began his adult life in the church, becoming known as the 'Red Priest', presumably due to his sandy-coloured hair. Health problems prevented him continuing actively in the priesthood and he turned his attention to music.

He wrote 18 operas, many sacred choral works and over 300 concerti, many for use at the Ospidale della Pietà orphanage where he was director of music. Of these, the 12 violin concerti known as The Four Seasons (from the opus 8 set, The Trial of Harmony and Invention), have become the best known. The third concerto, Summer, includes a graphic description of a thunderstorm which makes an effective showpiece when played by any solo instrument. Sadly, Vivaldi died in poverty in Vienna, whilst trying vainly to secure commissions for himself, but his music has survived to become some of the best loved in the world.

This carol is also known by its first line “On Christmas Night all Christians Sing”. It was discovered by Cecil Sharp in Gloucestershire and notably by Ralph Vaughan Williams in Sussex. Vaughan Williams heard it sung by Harriet Verrall of Monk’s Gate, near Horsham, Sussex (hence “Sussex Carol”). It is the melody that Harriet Verrall sang that Vaughan Williams transcribed and published in 1919. It is this same version that is still very popular today.

Jock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize. Since 1987 Jock has based his musical career in Hampshire, working as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer, arranger and brass teacher. Currently Jock holds the position of Professional Leader (Brass) for Hampshire Music Service and is the Director of the Hampshire County Youth Band. It is the mix of all of these musical roles that has led to Jock establishing a reputation as a leading creator of brass music resources, particularly in the field of education and brass ensemble music.

Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen (b. 1964, Norway) is one of Norway's finest composers and has gained an international reputation for his music for Brass- and Wind Bands and Ensembles.

The broad spectre of musical activity, the versitality in his production and his interest in working with amateurs and young musicians, can be explained by the fact that Aagaard-Nilsen sees composition as a kind social activity

His contact with the contemporary music scene in Bergen resulted in commissions from the Norwegian section of ISCM, the BIT 20 Ensemble and festivals like Borealis (Bergen International Contemporary Music Festival) and the International Festival of Bergen (Festspillene).

Prima Vista is delighted to re-release one of his early works for brass band SVoR - a superb suite based on three Norwegian folksongs:

The Swan is the 13th movement of Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals and was written in 1886. Originally scored for two pianos and a cello, this romantic solo, which represents the swan elegantly gliding across the water, is probably the most famous of all of the movements. This was the only movement of the work Saint-Saëns allowed to be published during his lifetime as he believed the rest of the work would damage his reputation as a serious composer.
