SPARKLING BRASS - Parts & Score
Available £99.99

Category: NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Philip Sparke

Grade 5
Duration 05.30

Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan’s top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which is introduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work.

Sparkling Overture was written to celebrate the centenary of the Swiss brass band La Musique Militaire de Rougemont. This energetic and dynamic piece opens with a festive and resolutely positive fanfare. The much more tranquil and lilting second theme is a magnificent chorale which is then followed by a brilliant return of the first motif. Used as a theme tune, this piece will be ideal as a contrasting, joyful and sparkling concert opening.

SPELLBINDING JEWEL, The- Eb Horn - Parts & Score
Available £24.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS for E♭. Horn
Composer: Paul Lovatt Cooper

This solo is in rondo form and written in a style which will appeal to both performer and listener. The first section is full of colour and vibrancy and has a rhythmic modern jazz feel that shows off the technical ability of the soloist.  The middle section is slow, where the soloist can put their own musical stamp on the lyrical phrases and melodies.  The end of the middle section builds to a climax before leading to a recapitulation of the first section which closes to a coda that is packed with fire and attitude and gives an exciting conclusion to this demanding solo.

SPIRIT of St. LOUIS - Parts & Score
Available £40.00

Categories: LIGHT CONCERT MUSIC, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Andrew Wainwright

On 20 May 1927, Charles Lindbergh set off for what would become the first solo non-stop transatlantic flight. Taking off from Long Island, New York, Lindbergh
managed to navigate successfully to Paris, France.

Lindbergh took off in ‘The Spirit of St Louis’, a custom-built, single—engine, single- seat, high-wing monoplane from Roosevelt Airfield, Garden City, New York, andlanded 33 hours, 30 minutes later at Aéroport Le Bourget in Paris, a distance of approximately 3,600 miles. This remarkable feat resulted in Lindbergh whirling the$25,000 Orteig Prize, the competition for which the plane was designed and built in just 60 days. It coincided with several other attempts to win the prize, with sixmen losing their lives in three separate crashes, and another three injured in a fourth crash.

Lindbergh’s New York-to-Paris flight made him an instant celebrity and media star. In winning the Qrteig Prize, Lindbergh stirred the public’s imagination. He
wrote: “l was astonished at the effect my successful landing in France had on the nations of the world. It was like a match lighting a bonfire.”

This work for brass band and percussion by Andrew Wainwright describes Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic in music. The opening bars through to letter
B represent the moments before Lindbergh’s upcoming attempt at the expedition, and despite a sense of trepidation and uncertainty from onlookers, Lindbergh
displays a quiet confidence represented in the horn solo which introduces the main ‘flight’ theme to be heard throughout the piece, from bar 5. Letters B to D paint
the picture of the take-off, with a gathering of momentum, before the Spirit finds itself in full flight at D with a brisk and virtuosic corner, euphonium and Xylophone trio.

The plane runs into turbulence at G, as the tonal centre becomes somewhat ambiguous and the compound rhythms are juxtaposed with duplet rhythms. At
this point Lindbergh is becoming somewhat agitated and disorientated. However, there is still a sense of optimism that the Spirit will find its intended destination,
with the ‘flight’ motif coming through in various sections of the band. After momentarily losing sight of its direction, there is a realisation that the plane is on
track again three bars before], and the music builds in momentum before a recapitulation in full of the ‘flight’ theme at L. There is a sense of exultation as the
Spirit comes in to land in Paris, as Lindbergh is greeted by a jubilant crowd of onlookers. Lindbergh’s mission has been accomplished and he has become the
first person to ever cross the Atlantic in an aeroplane.

St Peter’s Chorale was commissioned by Paul Holland and the Flowers Band for their 2017 Butlins Mineworkers’ Championship entertainment programme.

The band had chosen a London theme for their programme, and the of this work relates to St Peter’s Chapel in the Tower of London, a rare place of safety and sanctity around the time of the Great Plague outbreak of 1665. There are small references to the children’s song ‘Ring a Ring o’ Roses’, which many believe is about the plague.

STARBURSTS and CANYONS - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, LIGHT CONCERT MUSIC
Composer: Paul Lovatt Cooper

Duration 3.30

The annual RNCM Festival of Brass features a number of the country's top bands and is a platform for modern compositions. Starburst and Canyons was composed for Dr Nicholas Childs and the Black Dyke Band to perform at the festival in January 2011.

This piece takes its inspiration from John Adam's marvellous orchestral work 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine'. Starburst and Canyons follows a minimalistic blueprint with repetitive rhythmic passages from the cornets and percussion.

The idea behind the piece when listening to it is if you imagine going on a flight through and around the Grand Canyon in Arizona in the dead of night in a super charged jet plane. It is full of energy and momentum, it keeps on building in tension and colour to a tub thumping dramatic ending.

Stars is one of the most popular of all contemporary choral works by Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. The music begins with water-tuned glasses playing a sequence of chord clusters, which are heard throughout the whole piece. It creates an evocative effect, which is both imaginative and inventive producing an ethereal shimmering beauty. Phillip Littlemore's expert arrangement for brass band will bring a moment of enthralling stillness to any concert programme.
