"Over the Stone".
Tros y Garreg meaning ‘Over the Stone’ is a traditional Welsh song. The sentiment of the song is attributed to Rhys Bodychen, who led a troop of Welsh forces at the Battle of Bosworth Field where Richard III was defeated by Henry Tudor in 1485. The English lyrics are by John Oxenford:
Over the stone, the old gray stone, Let me ponder here alone, Through all weather we go together Ancient stone, thou good old stone. Of the many friends I’ve seen, Thou the truest friend has been, Some forget me, some have fled, Some are false, and some are dead, Changing never constant ever, Still I find thee, dear old stone.
Standing here, thou silent stone, What a world thou must have known! Deeds of glory, lost to story, Hast thou witnessd ancient stone. Here beneath the grass, ‘tis said, Many warriors bones are laid, Fighting for their land they fell, None but thou can truly tell. Secrets keeping, ever sleeping, Dream’st thou of the past old stone?
This skillful arrangement by Welshman Tony Small was composed for David Childs and the Cory Band and can be heard on the Doyen CD214 ‘CELTIC CHARM’ Available for purchase on this site. Duration c. 5’30”

There are many wonderful jazz play-along books and recordings currently available. My motivation in writing Blues & Greens was to create a unique new play-along book using fundamental jazz forms, and filling these with original material that is easily accessible and fun to play. I used various rhythmic styles to add the elements of challenge and entertainment. The harmonic material is quite simple, but contains enough chord movement to make each solo section appealing. Use these pieces to enhance your ability to incorporate interesting notes into your improvisation with ease, and to practice following the form of the solo sections. Six of the eight compositions are linked by title to the theme of Blues & Greens. Cerulean is based on the Latin word ‘caeruleum’ (‘blue, blueish’), which is derived from ‘caelum’ meaning ‘sky’, and refers to several different shades of the color blue. Mizuna is a type of green salad leaf.
Practicing with play-along books can be a lot of fun. We think you’ll enjoy Blues & Greens too! So get your horn, put on this CD, Keep Your Shirt On and Jazz It Up!
Allen Vizzutti While growing up in Montana, Allen Vizzutti was taught by his father, a self-taught musician and trumpet player, until he left home to attend the Eastman School of Music. There he earned a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, a Performer’s Certificate, a chair in the faculty brass quintet, and the only Artist’s Diploma ever awarded a wind player in Eastman’s 80-year history. While living in Los Angeles during the 80s, Vizzutti performed on 100 motion picture soundtracks and countless TV shows. Equally at home in a multitude of musical idioms, he has visited 30 countries and every state in the union to perform with a rainbow of artists and ensembles, from Chick Corea and Doc Severinsen to the Kosei Wind Orchestra. He has performed as a classical and jazz soloist all over the world. Vizzutti has also made many solo recordings. From his home base in Seattle, Washington, Vizzutti’s current career thrust is an impressive schedule of recitals, concerts, and composing. His continued commitment to education and the value of music in everyday life results each year in an extensive schedule of guest appearances at universities throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States in both jazz and classical idioms. As Artist in Residence, Vizzutti has taught at various schools and universities. Vizzutti’s love of expression through composition has led to world premiere performances by major American orchestras and other prominent ensembles.
