Jazz Disasters was premiered by David Childs, the dedicatee of the work during a solo recital at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in 2004. The genres of music I'm most influenced by are jazz, and the "Barbaric" tendency of early 20th century composers like Bartók and Stravinsky. I suppose they have rhythmic ostinato in common, and to me, having at one time played guitar in a big band, the marriage between (in this case) funk and brass seems a natural one.
David had a big input into my piece, encouraging me to explore the extreme regions of the instrument, and of its virtuoso capabilities. It is a kind of collision between the "Balkan" rhythms of the first and last sections and the funk-fusion feel of the middle, with some walking bass thrown in for good measure. The piece should feel like a runaway train, always on the point of coming off the tracks.

Euphonium Solo
Sullivan composed The Lost Chord whilst watching at his brother Fred's bedside during his last illness. The manuscript is dated 13th January 1877, five days before his brother’s death. He had been trying to set the words of Adelaide Procter to music for several years, but did not succeed until faced with Fred’s passing. The success of the song was immediate. None other than the Prince of Wales was said to have remarked that he would travel the length of his future kingdom to hear it sung. Sullivan later commented: "I have composed much music since then, but have never written a second Lost Chord"

This exciting concerto is an important new addition to the euphonium repertoire. It was written at the request of David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band, who gave the first performance in 2003. It was later recorded by the same performers on the award winning CD 'Three Worlds'. Although the origin of the tune is not known, it is most often associated with hymn "Lord of all hopefulness", with words by Jan Struther (1901-1953). It is quite often sung at wedding services, immediately after the signing of the register. It speaks of the desire that God goes with the couple into the future, helping them to fulfill their vows.

Parallel Realities is one of Peter Meechan’s earliest works for brass. It was composed in the year 2000 and although originally intended for solo trumpet, it has been well and truly adopted into the euphonium repertoire having received over 30 performances in this form. The first performance was given by David Thornton in January 2001.

Originally composed for euphonium and trombone quartet, Funk Theory became an instant success following its première in 2003, featuring the all female Bones Apart trombone quartet and David Childs. The music is based on two simple chord sequences; the first is heard in the first 7 bars and the second is an 8 bar sequence heard throughout the piece. The melody continually varies and develops becoming increasingly busy and difficult. It could almost be considered a small set of ‘funk’ variations. Funk Theory is great fun to play and creates a little ‘light relief’ during any concert. This version is with piano and or CD accompaniment.

About the music... Having enjoyed many of Peter Meechan’s early works for brass I commissioned Peter to compose a new work, for solo euphonium and trombone quartet, during the summer of 2003. Although composed for on unusual combination of instruments, the work became an instant success following its premiere on 7th October 2003, featuring the’all female ‘Bones Apart’ trombone quartet and myself in Manchester’s RNCM Concert Hall. It was obvious from the outset that the unusual instiumentation of the accompaniment would make Funk Theory difficult to programme, whidh is why the composer also produced versions for solo euphonium with piano or CD accompaniment presented here in this publication.

Funk Theory has been performed in its various forms by euphonium soloists throughout the world. It is great fun to play and creates a little ‘light relief’ within any recital programme. Funk Theory is also available in this series with trombone quartet accompaniment.
Performance tips... I have found the composer’s CD accompaniment, provided with this, piano reduction, works particularly well and truly captures the essence of the music. However, in perforrnance it is important to ensure the correct balance is achieved between the pre-recorded accompaniment and the soloist prior to any public performance. A poor balance will detract and can result in the performance becoming difficult for both soloist and audience.
The composer’s skillfully crafted piano reduction also works extremely well, but it is important for both soloist and accompanist to pay particular care to ensemble when tackling the rhythmic complexities present throughout the work. For any adventurous musicians out there, it can be effective to combine both the CD and piano accompaniments. If this is attempted it is sensible to allow the CD to begin the work with the piano joining at bar 106- Good luck!

The lyrical simplicity of its melodic line, combined with the plea of the title makes this one of the most intimate of Mendelssohn's works. Originally composed for soprano voice, chorus and organ, the music is always a dialogue between the individual and the Creator. In its original form Hear My Prayer is approximately twelve minutes in duration, but using material from the early and latter parts of the work David Childs has arranged this shorter version for solo euphonium. Euphonium Solo
The 1954 film, The Student Prince, is based loosely on Sigmund Romberg's operetta, with I'll Walk With God replacing one of the dated Romberg numbers. The part of the Prince was played by Edmund Purdom who lip-synched the songs to recordings by Mario Lanza. The story is generally quite light and witty in character. However, I'll Walk With God is sung by the Prince as he accompanies his father's coffin to its final resting place. As recorded by David Childs on CD 21235 Hear My Prayer.
