The Love theme from Fantasy Overture ROMEO and JULIET.
PROGRAMME NOTE
This arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s famous love theme for flugel and euphonium was created especially for husband and wife Helen and Glyn Williams, and formed part of Cory Band’s winning 2018 Brass in Concert Programme.
The world premiere of the Russian composer’s take on W/illiam Shakespeare’s well- known story took place in 1870 and has since developed a reputation as a firm concert hall favourite all around the world.
Philip Harper has extracted just the love theme from what Tchaikovsky called his ‘fantasy overture’, adapting the presentation of the melody to fit the duet format,
and the performers might like to imagine that they are playing out the iconic balcony scene from Shakespeare’s play, with both protagonists beginning off-stage
left and right, and slowly being drawn towards each other as the piece progresses.

Programme notes
Slate, Sea and Skyfeatures a musical landscape and journey in three integrated and continuous sections, led by the cornet soloist alongside ensembles broadly representing the title's elements: ‘slate’ (flugelhorn, tenor horns and trombones); ‘sea’ (baritones, euphoniums and basses) and ‘sky’ (comets). These alternate throughout with the full band, travelling towards
and through a storm, and emerging into bright skies at the end.
The title Slate, Sea and Sky is inspired by Norman Bissell's evocative poem of the same name, found in a book of poetry given to me by a close friend, to whom the work is dedicated.

Duration 4.30 From Hymn of the Highlands
The River Alladale provides the inspiration for this lyrical piece which has a lilting melody with an unmistakeable Scottish feel. The trio of Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn and Baritone provide a wonderful sense of flowing with the river which, as the piece progresses, broadens and grows stronger as it nears the outlet to the sea by the Summer Isles. Bring a touch of Scots magic to your concert with this delightful piece.
