Solo Tuba or E-flat Bass & Piano
A lighthearted arrangement of an old folk song. The style is generally bright with a short, slower change of pace in the middle.
En route there are a couple of quotations which got into the music almost unbidden: a fragment from one of Mozart’s horn con-
certi and ’A-hunting we will go’.

Deep River is one of the best known of the spirituals, originating among the enslaved Africans in the United States during the 18th. and 19th. Centuries. Although primarily expressions of religious faith, spirituals were also veiled protest songs, the sense of the oppression conveyed in the lyrics being clear to present day performers :
Deep River, My home is over Jordan, Deep River, Lord, I want to cross over into campground, Oh, don't you want to go, To the Gospel feast : That Promised Land, Where all is peace ?
The name of this piece comes from the fact that the theme was never composed tone by tone. When the theme came to me it felt like I had heard it several times before. I checked with some friends to find out if this actually was an existing piece of music. It turned out to be new! My first experience simply was a "Deja Vu".The piece has a relatively simple accompaniment. Needs a steady drummer! Contains an improvisation part for the soloist, but a written part can be used.
