Comments by Simon Birkett -

This arrangement of the spiritual Deep River has been composed in the style of the famous Count Basie. The tempo indication on the original manuscript states “the slower, the better! “, and therein lies possibly the most difficult aspect of this piece — the ability to keep the tempo slow enough!

There is nothing technically difficult in the notes themselves, but for the arrangement to work effectively, the ensemble must be very tight with the parts moving in rhythmic unison. Avoid the temptation to rush, especially in the basses. Good dynamics are essential, and the opportunity to show the maximum contrast comes right from the first bar. Also, individual parts must make sure that they always play at the dynamics on their part as various sections play at different dynamics simultaneonsly (see letter D for example).

Ensure that there is a good contrast when reaching section H as the straight approach is adopted (especially in the bass quavers) before returning to the swing approach at bar 66.

So that there is no doubt about the correct pronunciation, the title of this festival (concert) march means ‘to think about’! It was written in 2010 for the Belfast Temple Music School and recalls a particularly impressive open-air meeting from the previous year’s school. The main theme heard is ‘Onward, Christian soldiers’ while there is also reference to ‘A mighty fortress is our God’.

The ominous silences heard in Departed Heroes at dramatic moments and the falling chromatic sequences laced throughout give this stirring march a sad tint, most appropriate in this salute to Salvation Army warriors of the past.

Deus Invictus draws its inspiration from well-known words from Romans 8: 38-39; 'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any owers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, can separate us from the love of God'. The music reflects the confidence and certainty of the scripture text while, as in everyday life, trials and tests come along which are reflected in a sequence of musical skirmishes. The work introduces the 19th century hymn 'St Albinus' to a wider audience and also includes references to the tunes 'St Margaret' and 'Rachie'. A setting of the Easter Hymn, 'Christ the Lord is risen today!', is heard followed by a final reprise of 'St Albinus'.

The recurrent theme is the hymn 'Still, still with Thee' with which the composer has blended his own consideration of words from Psalm 139 (verses 7 - 11). In contrast, there are three opposing movements subtitled 'The Imprisoned Spirit', 'The Heart's Grief' and 'Tribulation' while the final section reaffirms 'The Eternal Presence'.

Translated as 'Praise the Lord', 'Exultate Deo' was conceived as an overture of praise to God. It brings together three contrasting songs of praise; 'Praise Him!', 'We are here to praise you' and 'Then will the very rocks cry out'. The bold opening uses the tune 'Gerontius' to which the words, 'Praise to the holiest in the height' are associated while the music concludes with the phrase 'Praise my soul, the King of Heaven'.
