The continued collaboration between director Tim Burton and film score composer Danny Elgman has led to numerous unforgettable soundtracks, such as Beetlejuice and Mars Attacks! as well as Batman. Elfman’s music captures the vivid dark undertones of the movie, and manages to maintain comic elements. Batman is such a popular character that even the likes of pop-star Prince contributed to the sound track with the song Batdance. Toshihiko Sahashi creates a brilliant medley with The Batman Theme, Batdance, and Party Man.

It takes a special ability to compose film scores which serve the images perfectly yet translate into first class concert music. William Walton was such a talent as the continuing popularity of his brilliantly evocative film music shows. This suite includes the famous Dog Fight and majestic March — used for the end titles of the film — along with the Siegfried Music which parodies Wagner’s horn call. You can practically feel the buzzing of Spitfires in the air!

PROLOGUE AND MAIN TITLE THEME
PROGRAMME NOTES :
Inspired by the success of the first Star Wars film, Universal Studios and the ABC-TV network invested large sums of money on lavish sets and visual effects to tell this epic saga of a ragtag fleet of human survivors. These last remnants of mankind, having escaped slaughter by the android Cylons, set out on a quest to find the legendary lost planet of Earth.
Composer Stu Phillips’ dramatic score for the three hour pilot film was performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He was also responsible for the themes to Buck Rogers and Knight Rider.
This arrangement contains the rarely heard Prologue’ music which gives a sense of the exotic with its use of bell-like percussion and sinuous flugel solo; this is followed by the now famous ‘Galactica Theme’ which is both heroic and noble in its use of fanfares and militaristic rhythms. The main theme was co-written by series creator Glen Larson.
