In A Flemish Christmas, Jan Hadermann tells the Christmas story by means of four Old Flemish Christmas Songs.Mary is chosen to bring Jesus Christ, the son of God, into the world: Het was een maged uitverkoren (‘She was a virgin chosen’).On the occasion of a census, Mary, who is with child, and Joseph, her husband to be, travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where Jesus will be born in a humble stable: Maria die zoude naar Bethlehem gaan (Mary would go to Bethlehem’).O kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen (‘Oh Christmas Night, more beautiful than the days’) is a stately chorale that sings the praises of Jesus’ birth.Three wise men from the East, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, follow a bright star in the sky, which leads them to Bethlehem. There, they worship the newborn King, and offer him gold, frankincense and myrrh: Wij komen van Oosten (We’ve come from the East’).This musical Christmas story ends with a festive repeat of the third movement, the stately chorale.
Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are still popular around the world today. Philip Sparke chose Gaudete, a song of praise from the middle ages, Coventry Carol, an English song from the 14th century, and In dulci jubilo, which can also be traced back to the 14th century, to form this joyous suite.
Described as “Rhythmic Seasonal Sillyness”, this smashing arrangement throws together a mixture of well known Christmas melodies (Noel, Silent Night, Schneewalzer) as well as some other surprises, wrapped up in a toe tapping waltz style, all finished off with a rendition of”We Wish You A Merry Christmas”. Perfect anywhere on a Christmas program and makes a great finale item.

Christmas as celebrated in England is a relatively new tradition dating from the time of Queen Victoria. Her husband Prince Albert was from Germany and he brought many German Christmas traditions with him, including the Christmas tree and Christmas cards, and even carols such as Hark, the Herald Angels Sing. Philip Sparke has however used a varied selection of English melodies to arrange into his ‘Festival of Carols".
