If you need a beautiful slow interlude for any concert then this is the piece for you. This short work by Italian composer Thomaso Albinoni has a luscious melody that will bring tears to any eyes. For hundreds of years the manuscript of this work had been lost and was only discovered in 1945. Despite this it has become Albinoni’s best known work and has topped the classical charts on many occasions. This Adagio contains one of Beethoven’s noblest melodies, simple and direct. It is repeated several times, only interrupted by two short contrasted passages, the second of which can easily be cut with only very small adjustments to the score.
The title ‘Pathetique” (‘Tragic’ in English) was forced on Beethoven by his publisher, keen to promote sales of the young composer’s music. The two outer movements of Piano Sonata Opus 1 3 are certainly stormy and dramatic in mood, but this slow movement is a haven of calm.
In this slow movement from Beethoven's best known early piano sonata, calm and sonorous melodies are interspersed with contrasting passages of moderately agitated music.

Gustav Mahler is probably one of the most important composers of late Romanticism. His symphonies are emotional extravaganzas of hectic, near neurotic movements on the one hand and extremely beautiful melodies and wonderful choral music on the other hand. This Adagio from his 3th symphony, which has been arranged in a majestic way by Georges Moreau, is a perfect example.

Grade 2.5 Duration 3.30
French composer, pianist and music teacher Louis Adam worked at the Conservatory in Paris for more than four decades. He wrote two renowned educational piano methods as well as a number of sonatas for piano and violin.
Robert van Beringen has arranged the Adagio from a Sonatine for piano and given the work the title Adam’s Song. Thus, this beautiful, relatively unknown music is now also available for brass bands — a beautiful rediscovery!
