Superb finishing number for a concert. (From Das Rheingold)

The Valkyrie, the second opera of Wagner’s Ring cycle, ends with the Gods crossing the rainbow bridge and entering into Valhalla, another name for Odin’s Hall, the home for the slain in battle. Wagner’s mish-mash of ancient Norse and Germanic legend need not worry the listener too much unless he or she wants to take in the whole Wagner experience. Needless to say, in this excerpt there is more than enough to enjoy of the majesty and variety of Wagner’s music.

Set as the Third Section Test Piece for the National Finals in the Albert Hall - October 2000. Commissioned by the St.Helen's Youth Band.
Four movements lasting 14.5 minutes :
1. Salute
2. Overture
3. Souvenirs
4. Hymnus (ex terra lucem)

Howard Snell writes :

Commissioned by Lynda Nicholson and the St Helen’s Youth Brass Band, EXCELSIOR! is dedicated to them and also to the memory of St Helen’s most famous musical son Sir Thomas Beecham. It was first performed in May 1999 by the Band, conducted by the Composer.

The title EXCELSIOR! means ‘Ever Upwards’. It is a traditional motto which I have used here to represent the striving of young musicians towards an ever improving expression of their talents. The first movement, a forthright FANFARE, leads directly into the second, OVERTURE, while the third, SOUVENIRS is an evocation of aspects of lighter French music, so beloved of Sir Thomas. After a short pause, the fourth movement commences. Its sub-title is ‘ex terra lucem’, the motto of St Helen’s itself, which can be translated ‘and from the earth comes light’, referring to the town’s long-established industry of glass-making. The play of sun and light through stained glass was in my mind during the composing of this movement.

FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN / HOEDOWN - Parts & Score

Categories: Howard Snell Music, LIGHT CONCERT MUSIC
Composer: AAron Copland
Arranger: Howard Snell

Aaron Copland was a highly gifted composer adept not only at composing deeply serious and challenging works but also at writing music comprehensible to the average music lover. He wrote three ballet scores which drew on the American West for their inspiration including Rodeo from whence comes the lively Hoe-Down. It is easy to imagine the scene at a Saturday night dance in the Old West as the locals let their hair down. One can almost smell the horses!

Categories: SOLOS - B♭. Cornet & Band, Howard Snell Music
Composer: Howard Snell

Howard Snell writes :

FANTASY for Cornet was first performed under its original title of ‘Kenwood Carol’ by John Hudson and the Britannia Building Society Band, with the Composer conducting at the Kenwood Concert Bowl in London in June 1988. Fantasy was commissioned by Michael Webber on behalf of English Heritage and dedicated to the memory of the Composer’s father. Fantasy mirrors the progress of the seasons from early Spring to the coming of Summer. In the latter stages of the work the composer introduces the mediaeval English round which starts with the words "Sumer is a-cumen in, Lhude sing cuckoo". The Fantasy is available both with Brass Band and Piano accompaniment. N.B. The Piano version is not an exact replica of the Brass Band score, but, in many details, has been re-composed in order to offer a valid pianistic equivalent to the original.

This Finale brings to a close one of the greatest ballet scores ever composed. The presentation of the themes and the way they develop to an overwhelming conclusion is without doubt masterly in terms of the final result... the audience reaction.

Bizet's talents were hardly appreciated in his lifetime, being yet another composer scantly rewarded for his talents. This lovely aria from Carmen shows again the heights he could scale.

Few composers have had the musical range of Shostakovitch, from the most profound to the the glam and glitzy, he is equally convincing. This is a short busy piece of film music that has become a staple in brass band programmes everywhere. It never fails.

Arguably the most successful opener of all - provided you've got the band ( cornets ) to play it. Superb "Russing" music, and a great arrangement. duration 2.36

1.Refrains and Choruses
2.Ballad
3.Improvisation
4.Galop

Howard Snell writes :

These four pieces were written for Gordon Higginbottom and the Tenor Horn Society, but are equally at home on the Euphonium. While they are essentially playful – “Bagatelle – a trifle, a light piece of verse or music” – two of the movements (2 and 3) tip the cap, with due reverence, to Brahms (including some quotation) and Bach. The third movement, in fact, requires the player to join in creating the piece by choosing a significant number of factors: the tempo, the articulation, and the overall characterisation. Above all, these little pieces require a very wide range of response, both musical and technical: in Nr. 1, for example, the mood varies from light and elegant to raucous and jazzy, while in Nr. 4, helter-skelter is the key. Both contain a certain amount of bad-tempered conflict between the soloist and the pianist.

Set as the Championship Section Test Piece for the 2017 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championships.
Bands competing in the 2017 National Finals need to cut Movement 4 - The March Back to Camp.
The performance duration with cut is 16 minutes 30 seconds.

GALLERY for Brass Band by HOWARD SNELL

The title ‘GALLERY’ refers to six pictures, four of them by Scottish artists. Each picture has a movement, in addition to which there is a very short introduction. They are all linked, though there are short gaps between each movement, the lengths of which are at the conductor's discretion.

Duration: Gallery complete is 20 to 20 minutes 30 seconds long. It can be played without Movement 4, The March Back to Camp, in which case the duration would be 15 to 16 minutes.

The first part of each title given below is the composer's, the second part is of the picture's actual title with its painter:

1: Entrance No picture - the visitor approaches the Gallery
2: Street Market The Barras by Paul Cox
3: The Skater's Waltz The Reverend Robert Walker skating on Duddingston Loch by Henry Raeburn
4: The March Back to Camp Gassed by John Singer Sargent
51 Love Story Old Couple by Caitriona Campbell
6: Cut-Outs Jazz, text and illustrations by Henri Matisse
7: Landscapes Two Views from Ben Lomond (looking South~West and looking North-West) by John Knox

One of Scotland's best known paintings (Mvt N°3) by Henry Raeburn is there. John Knox of Paisley depicts two views (treated as one) from Ben Lomond (Mvt N°7), while Caitriona Campbell presents Mvt l\l°5. The three other painters are John Singer Sargent, an American, whose large picture ‘Gassed’ (Mvt l\l°4) is from World War 1 - a French artist, Henri Matisse, with a collection of cut- outs that decorate his book entitled ‘Jazz’ (Mvt N°6) - and an Englishman Paul Cox, with an affectionate watercolour snap of the Barrowland Market, Glasgow (Mvt N°2).

The composer’s thanks go to The Scottish Brass Band Association for entrusting him with this commission, particularly Peter Fraser and Alan Edmonds. GALLERY is dedicated to two Scottish musicians: Bert Mackay, from Paisley, who, in the composer’s words “taught me the value of determination and hard graft." The second, John Erskine, of the Royal Scottish Junior Academy, “with whom I studied piano for two years," writes the composer. “The latter, very sparing of praise but generous of time and insight, opened my young ears to the great composers and what they were saying."

The Score is set out in four groups: from top to bottom they are left, right, centre, rear. Adjudicators will understand that the seating plan is an essential musical requirement for this piece, for which it has been specifically scored. The one element of flexibility at the conductor’s discretion, is the freedom to re~seat players within the Left and Right Groups. There are, however, to be no transfers of seating between the Left and Right groups, which must remain quite separate. The centre group must be set as specified, but the conductor may re-assign percussion parts according to players’ specialities.

The Percussion Section Parts contain music for instruments as follows:

Player 1—Tirnpani: 4 Timpani (All notes under the glissandi signs are to be struck.)
Player 2-Percussion 1: Side Drum, Rute (twigs), Bass Drum (Large), Sleigh Bells,
