The Four Maries - dedicated to Maurice Murphy
A suite of four works for solo Bb. Trumpet
Mary Fleming
Mary Seaton
Mary Beaton
Mary Livingston
On the 7th August 1548 the six year old Mary Queen of Scots sailed from Scotland to France. With her were four little girls of noble birth known to prosperity as the ‘Four Maries’, Mary Fleming, Mary Seton, Mary Beaton and Mary Livingston. The word Marie has its etymological derivation in the Icelandic word ‘maer’ a designation given to a virgin or maid. It was used in Scotland for the maids of honour who attendant on the queen. After the death of her husband, the sickly Francis II of France, Mary just eighteen years old returned to Scotland in 1560 with the Four Maries. Just before ten o’clock on Wednesday 8th February 1587 at Fotheringhay Castle in England Mary Queen of Scots then aged forty-four , and in the nineteenth year of her English captivity was executed. Mary’s French personal motto, ‘En ma fin est mon commencement’, ‘In my end is my beginning’ has proved so true. Few lives have been held up to such detailed scrutiny and the Four Maries are part of this fascination that continues to exercise succeeding generations. The Four Maries even have a pub named after them.
I dedicated the piece to the late great Maurice Murphy and an extract from a letter he wrote to me shows how humble this great man was.
"Dear Mike
Thank you so much for the dedication of your composition to myself, I’am very honoured to think that I warrant such recognition. It was great to see you in Glasgow and to work again with my old pal John (Gracie). It is rather weird, I don’t know if you are aware of the fact, that the 7th August, the day Mary Queen of Scots sailed is actually my birthday."

Duration 3.20
For Euphonium Soloist Gary Curtain and the Fodens Band.
‘From your Smile’ was commissioned by Gary and Leanne Curtin for the birth of their son Jamie. It was composed for Gary's latest solo CD entitled ‘Eiretime’.
With this particular piece I wanted to compose a lovely gentle melody to reflect Jamie. You hear this in the opening theme in the solo euphonlum. Also, with Gary's roots based in Ireland I wanted to include a Celtic feel to the melody. This comes in the second theme from the ensemble followed by the soloist.
After the return of the melody, the music then builds with a change of key with the original theme performed by the ensemble and the soloist soaring above with a countermelody. The bond between father and son is a unique one and the music concludes with a fragment from the opening melody line from the soloist as I envisage Gary holding Jamie safely in his arms as he rocks him to sleep.

Heroes
Heroes for unaccompanied solo trumpet was composed in April 2020 and is dedicated to all our NHS workers. During this pandemic many of our NHS workers have paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst looking after and caring for us. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.
The piece starts off as a type of fanfare but right away there is a kind of leitmotif of two low quaver Gs which represent heartbeats. Sometimes they are strong and other times weak but they are always there just like our NHS workers. After the initial statement there is a more legato section which takes as it’s premise the notes of the fanfare. An accelerando leads into a Scherzo when the technique and range of the performer is tested with fast tonguing and cascading semiquavers. A rallentando brings us to a recapitulation of the main theme and the piece ends with the heartbeat low Gs signalling hope over adversity.

At first glance it is easy to think that this piece is too difficult to perform and would require an immense amount of stamina in order to play it. However if a few basic points are remembered there is no reason why a player around the Grade 8 mark should not include this exciting work in their repertoire.
The key to stamina and endurance is good embouchure combined with deep, relaxed breathing. In the LAMENT try to take good deep breaths and endeavour to play long phrases. Don’t breathe in every rest as this would break up the musical line and cause you to become more tense as the movement progressed.
Also in the LAMENT, try to play very freely and expressively and allow plenty of space in the rests.
The DANCE is essentially a sectional accelerando throughout its duration. Start too fast and you will end up in big trouble by the time you reach the last page!!
Remember the DANCE should always be ‘dance—like’ so give plenty of attention to rhythmic accuracy, articulation and dynamic range. The semi-quavers should not be rushed once the tempo has been established
LAMENT & DANCE is an excellent performance piece and as such should always be played with as much energy and commitment as possible. If this is done it is very exciting for both audience and performer and allows the piece to be a real ‘tour de force’ PAUL ARCHIBALD
