This piece is inspired by NASA’s “Voyager” project, which was brought to mind by the recent mission to Mars. The two Voyager probes were launched into space in 1977 on a mission to explore the Solar System and beyond. They have now travelled far beyond Pluto and are still hurtling away from Earth at a speed of about 40,000 miles per hour! The music is intended to capture the spirit of a relentless journey into the unknown.

A Bass Trombone feature, “Wade in the Water” is an Afro-American Spiritual. The song relates to both the Old and New testaments and reflects the Israelites escape out of Egypt, There is a popular belief that Wade in the Water contained explicit instructions to fugitive slaves on how to avoid capture. In this arrangement, Mark Bassey has been influenced by Norman Symmons fine arrangement for the Johnny Griffin orchestra and was recorded by Superbrass on their “Brass Taps” CD with Andy Wood as soloist.
