Upon the Celtic Cross is the final movement from my Continental Concerto. The concept of the Concerto was to take a whistle-stop tour, anti-clockwise, around the various musical cultures and places of interest in Europe. Starting in the UK we work through France, Spain, Central Europe and Norway before finally returning back to the UK to finish.
The piece brings together two of Ireland's rich musical trademarks. Ancient, almost cinematographic chant-like music sets the scene at the opening before breaking out into the more widely recognised Irish dance music. I combine these two elements towards the close with a feature for Flugel Horn, accompanied by tribe-like singing within the band.

It's happened to most bands, in the middle of a quiet moment in the music, an audience member’s mobile phone rings (or worse, a band members!! !). Now, all can be forgiven in the fantastic “tongue-in-cheek” piece of music. Based around the music of Johann Strauss, this lively arrangement pokes fun at the Grand Wallz (Nokia’s preferred ring tone!), as well as some of the other often heard ring tones (William Tell etc). Fantastic entertainment value, working well in just about any concert.

Slow music easily playable by fourth section bands upwards.
Lying on high, calcareous sandstone rocks are the monumental monasteries of Meteora, a region in north- central Greece which look down over the valley of the Pinios River. This region inspired Kevin Houben to compose Valley of the Pinios. You can almost hear the wind swirl around the chalk rocks. The sacred atmosphere of the monasteries, the prayers, the solitude, the grandness of the valley and the splendour of nature are all reflected in this inspirational composition.
