Elegy for Band - duration 8.26
The initial idea was for a millennium piece, which it is, but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium, Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. This calm meditative work will bring a moment of serenity and reflection to any concert.

It is often thought that this melody came from the Victorian era, when Irish songs were very popular. However this was first published in 1813 and has been adapted and arranged by many composers and arrangers over the years. This arrangement, as a Flugel Horn solo, by Gary Westwood reveals the tenderness in this wistful love song.

3.00 duration.
Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) has the distinction of being regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist; he regarded music as being a truly international language and knew that his compositional style was largely the product of European, particularly German, influence. He was idolised as a super-star during his lifetime, both in the USA and abroad, and was a virtuoso pianist — good enough really to impress Franz Liszt, with whom he studied for a time. He composed a vast quantity of piano music as well as several dozen songs and a number of orchestral pieces. But it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work. Of these To a Wild Rose is the most popular. Its simple honesty has led one prominent music critic to claim that it is worth all the rest of MacDowell’s piano music put together.
To the Ancient Crosses was commissioned by Foden’s as part of their ongoing relationship with Andy as Composer in Residence, and premiered by the band at St Mary’s Church in Sandbach in July 2011. The title refers to two 9th century stone Anglo-Saxon crosses in the centre of Sandbach, and the work is dedicated to Sandbach Town Council for their continued support of the band.
To the Ancient Crosses features rhythmic, fanfare-like motifs contrasting with lyrical melodic lines, with an uplifting finale. Ideal as a concert first half or second half opening piece of mu-sic. Recorded by Foden's Band on the CD Patrons’ Choice V, which is available from World of Brass or direct from Foden’s Band.
