Por una cabeza, literally translated as "by a head [of a horse]" in Spanish (meaning a horse winning a race by one head's distance), is one of the most famous and popular Argentine tangos.
Composer Carlos Gardel (11 December 1890 – 24 June 1935) was a singer, songwriter and actor, and is perhaps the most prominent figure in the history of tango. The music has appeared in numerous TV and Film soundtracks, perhaps most memorably in the famous dancing scene featuring Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman.
This extended arrangement for cornet (or trumpet) incorporates a cadenza and newly written interludes.
Extracts performed by the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, conductor David King. Full recording available on War of the Worlds - The Music of Peter Graham – available on this site.

Tango de Buenos Aires was written to celebrate the harmonic and rhythmic idioms used by the great Astor Piazzola, composer of dramatic Argentinian Tango music. This work attempts to capture the atmosphere with a modern adaptation of the dynamic rhythms and descending chromatic harmonies. It is a colourful addition to any programme and good for a quite serious or light concert.

Tarantella is a group of various folk dances characterized by a fast upbeat tempo, usually in 6/8 time (sometimes 12/8 or 4/4), accompanied by tambourines. It is among the most recognized forms of traditional southern Italian music. This composition is a modern take on the classical form, used by many of the great classical composers(eg. Rossini, Britten, Chopin and many more).

Rossini's famous tarantella from The Barber of Seville this is NOT. Taken from 'Sins of My Old Age' this is an 'Aristocratic Tarantella' according to the composer. It is a very high-spirited virtuoso caper, somewhat shortened from the original. (THAT can be found as the Finale in 'Musical Evenings' by Rossini in the Symphonic Brass catalogue.)
