Christina Rossetti wrote the words to this famous Christmas carol in 1872 in response to a request from the magazine Scribner's Monthly for a Christmas poem. They were set to music by Gustav Holst (1874-1934) for inclusion in the first edition (1906) of The English Hymnal, edited by his life-long friend, Ralph Vaughan Williams. Philip Sparke has carefully arranged the beautiful melody into this delightful version for brass band. A must for any Christmas concert

The tune “Cranford” composed by Gustav Holst is the most popular choice for the lyrics to “In The Bleak Midwinter”. This arrangement by Adrian Horn has taken this gem of a melody and added a different dimension to the work. Short fanfares and a military take on this well loved carol work together perfectly to bring you something different for your Christmas program.

Mr Walters gives us 30 melodies in 3 min’s 10 secs. I give you another 31 Christmas tunes that fit in with Mr Walters originals in a mere 3 mins’ 20 sec’s. There are two tunes I’ve included that remind me of Christmas from my childhood, one is a film theme (no quote), as they always shoved this one in on Boxing Day without fail. The other is a novelty/comedy song, it reminded me of my Father who had to decorate every Christmas Eve, as in, paint the living room and wallpaper the hall. It was called, “When Father papered the Parlour” here is the opening verse. In 6/8
“When Father papered the parlour, you couldn’t see him for paste,
Slappin’ it here, slappin’ it there, slappin’ it bloomin’ everywhere,
The kids were stuck to the ceiling, me Ma was stuck to the floor,
You’ve never seen such a terrible job of pastin’ done before”
May it bring you joy, and some comfort?
Happy Christmas Bands People, one and all, Ho, Ho, Ho !

Duration: 2:30 Minutes
Percussion section requires: Timpani, Side Drum and Tubular Bells
The English version of this carol is set to the tune ‘Noel’. This was adapted from an older English melody by the composer Arthur Sullivan in 1874. However, the lyrics were composed in the USA by Edmund Sears, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts in 1849.
Jock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize. Since 1987 Jock has based his musical career in Hampshire, working as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer, arranger and brass teacher. Currently Jock holds the position of Professional Leader (Brass) for Hampshire Music Service and is the Director of the Hampshire County Youth Band. It is the mix of all of these musical roles that has led to Jock establishing a reputation as a leading creator of brass music resources, particularly in the field of education and brass ensemble music.
