DECLARATION of ARBROATH - Trumpet & Piano
Available £7.50

Categories: SOLOS - B♭. Cornet/Trumpet with Piano, NEW & RECENT Publications, Michael Bennett Collection
Composer: Michael Bennett

Composer and trumpet player Michael Bennett performs the opening section of his lastest work for Bb. Trumpet and Piano - The Declaration of Arbroath.

The composer writes :

I composed this piece for trumpet and piano to celebrate the 700th anniversary of The Declaration of Arbroath, one of Scotland’s most important artefacts. The Declaration is in the form of a letter, in Latin, submitted by the nobles of Scotland to Pope John XXII on 6th April 1320 to confirm Scotland’s status as an independant, sovereign country.

After a short introduction on the piano the trumpet enters with a melody which takes the form of a Scottish Ballad. The accompaniment on the piano is simple chords which grow in intensity as the ballad develops. After the piano repeats the melody in the high register the trumpet enters with a recapitulation of the main theme. The Andante draws to a close with the trumpet being accompanied by simple but effective arpeggios on the piano.

The Allegro Vivo is in the form of a Scottish Jig and is based on the Jacobite  song “Oer the Water to Charlie”.The Jig starts in 7/8 and develops through 12/8 and 13/8 giving the feeling of turbulence. After a quiet muted section the Jig returns in its full glory with the trumpeter showing his virtuosity.

The River Alladale provides the inspiration for this lyrical piece which has a lilting melody with an unmistakeable Scottish feel. The trio of Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn and Baritone provide a wonderful sense of flowing with the river which, as the piece progresses, broadens and grows stronger as it nears the outlet to the sea by the Summer Isles. Bring a touch of Scots magic to your concert with this delightful piece.

'Skibbereen', also known as 'Dear Old Skibbereen', 'Farewell to Skibbereen', or 'Revenge for Skibbereen', is an Irish folk song, in the form of a dialogue wherein a father tells his son about the Irish famine, being evicted from their home, and the need to flee as a result of the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848.

The first known publication of the song was in a 19th-century publication, The Irish Singer's Own Book (Noonan, Boston, 1880), where the song was attributed to Patrick Carpenter, a poet and native of Skibbereen. It was published in 1915 by Herbert Hughes who wrote that it had been collected in County Tyrone, and that it was a traditional song. It was recorded by John Avery Lomax from Irish immigrants in Michigan in the 1930s
.
The son in the song asks his father why he left the village of Skibbereen, in County Cork, Ireland, to live in another country, to which the father tells him of the hardship he faced in his homeland. It ends on a vengeful note expressed by the son.

Paul Lovatt-Cooper‘s ‘Neath the Dublin Skies was composed for David Childs and received its premiere by David and the Cory Band during their Seplember 2007 tour of lreland. The music is certainly Irish in nature featuring an atmospheric introduction, ornamented reel, lyrical melody and a high spirited jig. Wiih multi-phonics and lip glissandi amongst the challenges set for the soloist, the music is a lot of fun to perform and a welcome addition lo the repertoire.

This work was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, The Triangle Brass Band of North Carolina, USA and their director of music, Tony Granados.

The first performance was given by Jens Lindemann ( cornet ) with the Triangle Brass  of North Carolina, USA and their director of music, Tony Granados. on 18th. of March 2012 in the Meymandi Concert Hall, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.

The first UK performance was given by Richard Marshall 9 cornet ) with the BLack Dyke Band conducted by Nichoilas Childs on 26th. January 2014  in the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, as part of the RNCM Festival of Brass. This live performance was subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 4th. February 2014.

Martin Ellerby writes :
The work is intended to be a bright, optimistic and lyrical concerto, accessible to players and audiences alike and completes my set of five concertos designed for key chairs of a brass band : in order of writing -
Tuba ( Eb Bass )
Euphonium
Tenor Horn
Trombone
Cornet.

The work falls into three contrasting movements :

01. BRILLANTE - A traditional sonata form is adopted and adapted, the two subjects being firstly a lively fanfare type figure followed by a second cantabile theme. These ideas are worked out until eventually a cadenza section is reached which is followed by a coda which, though concluding is light in dynamics.

02. ARIETTA - The emphasis is placed on legato phrases and an overall singing quality from both soloist and accompanist who share the material in lyrical partnership.

03. RONDINO - Another traditional form, rondo, is employed for the finale and here attention is turned to rhythm with contrasting changes of metre creating a restless journey towards a dynamic, and this time certain conclusion.

NEW DAWN, A - Tenor Horn Solo - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Category: SOLOS for E♭. Horn
Composer: Christopher Bond

A New Dawn (2013) was commissioned by and written for British tenor horn virtuoso Owen Farr in late 2013, to provide the title track of his new CD album. With a specific brief, the work was to include a bold ear-catching ‘fanfare-esque’ opening to bring maximum impact to the opening of the album, before settling in a rhythmic groove which allows the new tempo and reduced texture to settle before the entry of the tenor horn, who’s initial four bar motif is what forms the basis of much of the work. Following this, structurally, the work follows with a set of variations, carefully demonstrating the capabilities of the instrument and indeed the player. Bar 90 sees the return of the bold opening gestures, this time followed with a harmonic transformation, before a recapitulation at bar 120 which sees a return to the original tenor horn material and an increase in intensity, volume and virtuosity through to the close.

A New Dawn was premiered by Owen Farr and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band on 30th December 2013, and was recorded by Owen and the Cory Band in March 2014, featuring as the title track on his CD release of the same name.

GAUDETE - Eb Soprano Cornet Solo - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Category: SOLOS - E♭.Soprano Cornet
Composer: Traditional
Arranger: Christopher Bond

For Soprano Cornet & Brass Band, Commissioned by & Written for Steve Stewart & Cory Band

Gaudete is a sacred Christmas carol, which is thought to have been composed in the 16th century, but could easily have existed as a monophonic hymn in the late medieval period. Within the lyrics, there are references to Christ, Virgin Mary, Grace, Ezekiel and Salvation.

This arrangement takes the striking tune and re-works it for Soprano Cornet and band, transforming the melody in places, whilst also keeping that familiar tune in its original form. Gaudete was recorded by Steve Stewart & Cory Band in 2016, featuring on its album 'A Festival of Fanfares & Carols'.

OVER THE HORIZON - Eb. Soprano Cornet Solo - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Category: SOLOS - E♭.Soprano Cornet
Composer: Christopher Bond

For Soprano Cornet & Brass Band, written for & Commissioned by Steve Stewart & Cory Band

Over the Horizon (2017), whilst both harmonically and compositionally a simple endeavour, is a spine-tingling beautiful melody for soprano cornet. Based on the painting seen in the sleeve notes of Steve Stewart’s album of the same name, the work takes its inspiration from the open expansiveness of the ocean, glistening in the moonlight as four people sit quietly - two parents, a boy, and a girl. A feeling of heartfelt longing throughout the work which is developed both melodically and texturally by soloist and accompaniment; perhaps reflecting the desire to know indeed what is over the horizon. The longing intensifies with a climatic section of grandeur - a feeling of longing which arguably isn't resolved until that all-important - and high - last note.

Over The Horizon was written for and commissioned by Steve Stewart and Cory Band in Spring 2017.
