This song was composed for the 1970 John Travolta film Saturday Night Fever, and the 70's disco vibe is never far from the music. In combination with the scat style of Latin singer Tania Maria, this arrangement features virtuosic solos for tenor horn, trombone and soprano cornet, with all of the Bb.Cornets kept thoroughly busy throughout.
The work can be heard on the CD CORY IN CONCERT Vol.5

An arrangement created by the composer from the third movement of 'Salt of the Earth', a Concerto for Tuba & Brass Band, commissioned by Les Neish, premiered by Les & Foden's Band at the RNCM Festival of Brass 2008, and recorded on the CDs 'Salt of the Earth' (World of Brass SFZ 150) & 'Double Trouble (World of Brass SFX 152).
'Salt of the Earth Finale' is scored for Brass Band and was arranged especially for Foden's Band recording of the 'A World Within' CD in February 2010. The CD was released in September 2010 at the British Open Brass Band Championship at Symphony Hall, Birmingham. 'Salt of the Earth Finale' is a fiery mix of Latin rhythms and big band power! With a virtuosic introduction from the solo cornets and percussion, the full band then enters with the catchy melody, before a two part contrapuntal passage that leads into a series of short 'solo breaks'. The main theme returns, re-scored for added impact, before an extended contrapuntal section, which leads to two closing paused chords, which may be separated by an optional extended drum/percussion solo if required.

Sir Robert Mayer, CH (1879–1985), was a businessman, philanthropist, and patron of music, who in 1923 founded the highly successful Robert Mayer concerts for children. In 1954 he extended his patronage by creating Youth and Music. It was this organization, through its joint chairman Lord Drogheda, that commissioned a fanfare from Walton to open a concert on 5 June 1979 at the Royal Festival Hall, celebrating Sir Robert’s centenary. The queen, who had attended his concerts for children when young, was present. Walton planned his fanfare as a short introduction to the orchestral national anthem and, with unlimited youthful forces at his disposal, scored it for 12 trumpets. The Salute was originated by OUP and read in proof by Walton, but has never been published until now.
