INTRODUCTION
This collection of 25 of my favourite slow melodies gives euphonium and baritone players all around the
world the chance to enjoy hours of the most sublime melodic music. Away from the hectic stress of
virtuoso technical repertoire here is a chance to show off the sound of the euphonium at its best.
Over the years I've played a lot of very difficult music, giving first performances of hundreds of new works
and commissions. This has been central to my life as a soloist. But with an instrument like the euphonium,
capable of such beautiful ethereal sounds the universal appeal of this instrument must be it's ability to
deliver melodies with a human appeal which audiences find quite captivating. It has been this
characteristic I have observed so clearly in over thirty years of travelling. It crosses language and cultural
borders with consummate ease, creating a bond of human emotion that is genuine and that stays in the
memory long after the 'live' moment has ended.

Selecting the melodies for this collection Luc Vertommen has been digging deep into well known and
lesser known gems from the violin, cello and vocal repertoire. I enjoy the variety of accompaniments and
melodies from around the world. For me, this creates a self-revelatory feeling, as I have since earliest
memory 'sang' from the heart. For me every note in a melody has value and meaning, always going
somewhere and always carrying an emotion that l hope to convey to the listener.
There is a great variety of ‘melodies’ here. Some of them are very simple where the beauty of the phrasing
can be explored patiently, and at times, in the case of the arias, the melodic line can be cross-referenced
with the texts. Several others are very extended and will require much more study and have added
challenge of large intervals and extremes of range and demands on stamina.
So, I hope you enjoy this collection of melodies that will soothe and calm, and continue to show off the
extraordinary instrument that is the euphonium.

The question of phrasing and articulation is a very interesting and important one for such melodies,
especially as some of them originate as vocal works , works for solo stringed instrument, or keyboard, for
example. Each of these genres present different challenges for the brass player, and many decisions need
to be made to make our performance effective. We have tried to notate accurately and helpfully, but it is
up to the performer to add or even change annotated articulations and dynamics if they feel it’s necessary
I would urge all of you who attempt these melodies to try to listen to these melodies in their original
context, and there are many ways to do this these days, including YouTube, Spotify, CD Baby, or by doing
what we used to do, buy recordings! The nuance brought to these melodies in original performances
cannot always be notated successfully on printed paper, and so it's essential you do some background
work can make your performance sound ‘authentic’.

TURBULENCE, TIDE and TORQUE - Parts & Score
Available £84.95

Categories: SOLOS - Baritone, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Peter Graham

Turbulence, Tide and Torque can be considered to be a companion piece to my 2008 Euphonium Concerto In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen, and indeed can be performed on Euphonium (vintage or medium bore instrument preferred). Whereas the gentlemen in question in the latter work were fictional (e.g. Sherlock Holmes and Phileas Fogg), the former pays tribute to three real life women who were very much true pioneers and heroines of their age.

Turbulence: Harriet Quimby (b. 1875) was one of the world's best woman aviators, her significant and historic achievement being the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Sadly, in her lifetime very few people were aware of her 1912 accomplishment; potential press coverage was dominated by the sinking of The Titanic only two days before.

Grace Darling (b. 1815) is a name much more familiar to the public today, and in her lifetime she was lauded as a national heroine. A humble lighthouse keeper's daughter from Northumberland, her participation in the rescue of survivors from the wrecked paddle-steamer Forfarshire is well documented (a museum dedicated to her achievements located in Bamburgh, the town of her birth). This movement, Tide, develops a main theme from my large scale work Harrison's Dream, reflecting on the souls lost in the disaster.

The final movement Torque, opens with a sudden gear change such as might have been undertaken by Dorothy Levitt (b. 1882), the woman's world land speed record holder, in her Napier racing car. Levitt, who following her 1906 record-breaking achievement was described as the Fastest Girl on Earth, went on to write extensively about her experiences, encouraging females to take up motoring through her articles in The Graphic newpaper.

Turbulence, Tide and Torque was commissioned by and is dedicated to Katrina Marzella as part of an Arts Council of England funded residency I was awarded with the Black Dyke Band in 2018.

SLATE SEA and SKY - Eb. Soprano Solo and Piano accomp.
Available £12.50

Category: SOLOS - E♭.Soprano Cornet
Composer: Liz Jane

Programme notes
Slate, Sea and Skyfeatures a musical landscape and journey in three integrated and continuous sections, led by the cornet soloist alongside ensembles broadly representing the title's elements: ‘slate’ (flugelhorn, tenor horns and trombones); ‘sea’ (baritones, euphoniums and basses) and ‘sky’ (comets). These alternate throughout with the full band, travelling towards and through a storm, and emerging into bright skies at the end.

The title Slate, Sea and Sky is inspired by Norman Bissell's evocative poem of the same name, found in a book of poetry given to me by a close friend, to whom the work is dedicated.

ROBIN, ROBIN - Euphonium and Piano accompaniment
Available £8.50

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - Euphonium
Composer: Liz Lane

Duration 5.0

Programme note
Robin, Robin was especially adapted for David Thornton (euphonium) from the song of the same name, originally recorded by Belinda Evans (soprano) with Stephen Marquiss (piano) to help raise funds for Yeovil Hospital's Flying Colours Appeal.

Words written by Jennifer Henderson trace a robin’s journey through the seasons Spring — ‘fearless and bold’, Summer — ‘a bird with attitude’ through to Autumn — ‘when other birds fly away, you’re loyal’. The robin’s song can be heard throughout in short interludes on the euphonium, finishing with Winter — ‘what do I care if the ground is hard? l’ll be tweeting my greeting from a Christmas card’.
