"By Trevone Bay" was composed for Flugel Soloist Zoe Hancock and the Black Dyke Band to celebrate both their Double Champion Victory at the British Open and National Championships 2014 and Zoe’s unique achievement in winning the Best Soloist Award in both contests - an accomplishment never done before. Section: 4+
The world premier was performed by Zoe and the band at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on February 8th 2015.
‘By Trevone Bay’ is a lovely lyrical slow melody that utilises the full range and colour of the flugel horn. Starting with an atmospheric opening the soloist performs the main theme, which repeats with more colour in the accompanying parts and solo line. After introducing a second theme from the ensemble, the solo cornets perform the main melody with the soloist enjoying a lyrical counter melody. The piece develops with a tranquil middle section from the soloist that builds for the second theme to return, performed by the ensemble while the soloist soars over the top. Ending as it starts, the piece dies away to leave the soloist performing the opening melodic phrase to a tranquil close.
As for the title: Trevone Bay is a beautiful tiny bay in Cornwall, close to Zoe’s home town of Roche. Its tranquil waters lead out to the Celtic Sea and provide a picturesque landscape. The views there can be enjoyed all year round but they are particularly beautiful at sunset.

for Katrina Marzella and the Black Dyke Band.
"With His First Breath" is the lovely slow melody taken from the middle movement of my larger work Breath of Souls. It has been composed for performance by any B-flat soloist within the ensemble - Cornet, Euphonium, Baritone, Flugel or Trombone.
Starting with a short introduction the soloist enters, performing the main theme with simple accompaniment from the ensemble. After a short interlude the main theme is performed again, this time in the new change of key and a lot quieter showing off the soloist’s dynamic control.
The contrasting middle section gives the opportunity for a counter melody by the soloist before a build to the return of the main theme. This time the soloist combines with the ensemble playing part of the main melody and then souring over the ensemble with the countermelody before bringing the piece to a peaceful close.
"With His First Breath" is dedicated to my son, Luca.

The Mist Through the Dawn was commissioned by The CLINICAL TRIAL Company TM and composed for Emily Braverman and The Cooperative Funeralcare Band. Section: 4+
It is a lyrical slow melody concert work for euphonium or Bb instrument. Circa 4.20 soloist grade 6
This piece was commissioned by Swiss euphonium virtuoso Eich Schmidli.
Bert Appermont dug deep into Celtic music for inspiration and created a fantasy that shows off the incredible, but often overlooked, versatility of the euphonium. Charming lyrical melodies, virtuosic runs and exciting, colourful tuttis create plenty of contrast in this exciting work. The difficulty level for the soloist and band means almost any band to perform this piece and showcase their euphonium player.

One of a growing number of publications in the Brass for Africa series.
Alan Fernie has dedicated this work to Rebecca Richards, who was the charity's first full time Country Manager based in Kampala, Uganda serving three years from August 2015.
In those three years Rebecca has achieved, and was responsible for, so much in establishing Brass for Africa as a reputable and effective charity bringing about real positive change in the lives of many young people in Uganda.
You may hear elements of both the U.S. and Ugandan national Anthems in this work, but Alan's performance notes say it all " Gentle and Kind"

This piece was written for the Welsh percussionist Leslie Lewis. Born in the Rhondda Valley, Lewis became a pupil of the legendary Ernest Parsons, timpanist and founder member of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a member of the instrument manufacturing family of E.A. Parsons & Company and an internationally-renowned authority on timpani and percussion. Lewis joined Parsons in the CBSO, becoming principal percussionist and later he was appointed solo percussionist with the BBC Theatre Orchestra in London. Sadly, the very morning he was to take up his new appointment, he stepped off the Birmingham train at Euston station, suffered a heart attack and died there and then on the platform - a tragic end to a promising career.

Euphonium and Brass Band Beriato Solo Works Series. product type Set (Score & Parts). A product from Beriato Music Publishing
For a Flower is a very melodic and virtuosic solo work for euphonium and brass band. It opens with a gentle solo introduction on euphonium, which develops into a grand hymnal theme. Following this comes a faster and more virtuosic section in a traditional Irish style, with a varied dialogue between the band and the soloist. The work closes triumphantly with the hymnal theme of the opening. For a Flower showcases both the musical and technical capabilities of this wonderful instrument. The euphonium soloist must naturally master both skills: lyrical playing and virtuoso playing. For a Flower was commissioned by the Dutch euphonium virtuoso Robbert Vos and is dedicated to his wife, Evi.
