Six jazz solos for Bb. Trumpet & Piano

Jazz in Time was designed for developing brass players looking for extra repertoire that is both fun to play and helpful in developing the skills required in jazz playing - those of good rhythmic awareness, stylish attention to detail and strong reading.

The piano parts are also intended to both be educational to the more Classically trained performer to teach jazz skills and to the typical busy brass teacher who hasn't quite honed advanced piano skills.

Each piece uses elements of harmonic progression from an established melody.

FROM YOUR SMILE - Bb.Solo - Parts & Score
Available £29.95

Categories: SOLOS - ANY B♭. Inst., NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Duration 3.20

For Euphonium Soloist Gary Curtain and the Fodens Band.

‘From your Smile’ was commissioned by Gary and Leanne Curtin for the birth of their son Jamie. It was composed for Gary's latest solo CD entitled ‘Eiretime’.

With this particular piece I wanted to compose a lovely gentle melody to reflect Jamie. You hear this in the opening theme in the solo euphonlum. Also, with Gary's roots based in Ireland I wanted to include a Celtic feel to the melody. This comes in the second theme from the ensemble followed by the soloist.

After the return of the melody, the music then builds with a change of key with the original theme performed by the ensemble and the soloist soaring above with a countermelody. The bond between father and son is a unique one and the music concludes with a fragment from the opening melody line from the soloist as I envisage Gary holding Jamie safely in his arms as he rocks him to sleep.

PULSE - Euphonium Solo with Piano
Available £20.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - Euphonium
Composer: Thomas Doss

Grade 5.0
Duration 07.15

Pulse is a solo work for baritone or euphonium and brass band but also available concert band - and with piano accompaniment. As the title suggests, this piece is very rhythmic in nature. Pulse represents life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constantthroughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by the baritone, the pulse of the timpani continues to beat steadily. This work is dedicated to the young soloist Felix Geroldinger of upper Austria.
LITTLE CLOVER - Cornet Solo - Parts & Score
Available £69.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - B♭. Cornet & Band
Composer: Etienne Crausaz

Grade 3.5 ( Soloist 5 )
Duration 06.25

Cornet solo commissioned by Carole Rudaz, a Swiss cornetist, on the occasion of her 40th birthday. Due to its rarity, the four-leaf clover is considered lucky in western culture. But the common three-leaf shamrock, also known as Little Clover, is one of the symbols of Ireland, whose traditional music greatly influenced the general aesthetics of this piece. The work is in three parts: the first, in 6/8, is very lively and virtuosic. After a short cadenza, the second part introduces a theme tinged with melancholy, while the last part is a dance in 2/2 that reprises the theme of the second part to conclude the piece

BECH- Euphonium Concerto & - Parts & Score
Available £35.00

Categories: SOLOS - Euphonium, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Ludovic Neurohr

Concerto for Euphonium, with Brass Quartet and Brass Band.
Dedicated to Glenn Van Looy

PROGRAMME NOTES

BECH is a concerto by Swiss composer Ludovic Neurohr, commissioned by Glenn Van Looy as part of his studies toward his Doctorate at Salford University. The title BECH essentially represents the countries of Belgium (BE) and Switzerland (CH), the former being Glenn’s country of birth and the latter where he currently resides. The composer envisaged writing a biographical piece about Glenn's life and journey.

The lone euphonium at the outset seeks to portray a window to the past, with the aim of taking the listener to a different place. The leitmotif in this case is comprised of the notes G for Glenn and A for Anne (Glenn’s wife), passing to B for Anne's family name (Barras) and for Belgium, C and H for Switzerland and finally D for the neutral chord.

A traditional brass quartet opens the second section, as the leitmotifs start to work together. The euphonium joins the quartet, a representation of Glenn establishing himself as a soloist of international renown and starting to make his name in the music world. The finale commences with a transition between the quartet and the band that leads into a triumphant finish.

Available £30.00

Categories: SOLOS - Euphonium, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Liz Lane

Duration 5.0

Programme note
Robin, Robin was especially adapted for David Thornton (euphonium) from the song of the same name, originally recorded by Belinda Evans (soprano) with Stephen Marquiss (piano) to help raise funds for Yeovil Hospital's Flying Colours Appeal.

Words written by Jennifer Henderson trace a robin’s journey through the seasons Spring — ‘fearless and bold’, Summer — ‘a bird with attitude’ through to Autumn — ‘when other birds fly away, you’re loyal’. The robin’s song can be heard throughout in short interludes on the euphonium, finishing with Winter — ‘what do I care if the ground is hard? l’ll be tweeting my greeting from a Christmas card’.

As featured by Owen Farr on the CD "A NEW DAWN"

I wrote this tenor horn concerto for Owen Farr in 2002, whilst we were both studying at the RNCM in Manchester. I had never heard a brass player like Owen before and was stunned by his technical brilliance as well as his musicality. Also, being at college myself, and exploring the horn repertoire in more detail, I wanted to write something which showed the versatility of the instrument and used more of the extreme range. This was my first attempt at a large-scale work.

I actually gave the premiere of the 2nd movement in my final degree recital, but Owen gave the first official premiere of the full work at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2005.

Individual Movements are as follows :

01. Call to Arms - 5.00
02. Forgotten Oath - 6.21
03. Fool's Dance - 3.29

Gramercy Cornet Album

I am delighted to present this collection of solos for Cornet, part of a series of albums planned for brass instruments including Euphonium, Trombone and Tenor Horn. The contents are for advanced (and in some cases virtuoso) players in mind and although designated as a Cornet Album the titles within are (mostly) equally suitable for Trumpet.

Cossack Fire Dance is the central movement of Call of the Cossacks, a suite originally written for the Black Dyke Brass Band. Based on the folk song Mazeltov the music brings to mind part of the Cossack wedding ceremony where, following a Klezmer style clarinet call, each guest around the camp fire comes forward in turn to offer congratulations.

The multiple instrumentalists of the original have been supplanted by a single "guest" whose increasingly attention seeking behaviour includes quoting from a number of popular musical display pieces...

The idea of creating this solo version came from Florida-based Trumpeter Thomas Macklin.

Resurrection is a Rhapsody for Trumpet (or Cornet) which takes as its model composer Ray Steadman—Allen's classic solo Rhapsody on Negro Spirituals. Like Steadman-Allen's work, Resurrection is based upon two spirituals, in this case He Never Said a MumbIin' Word and The Angels Rolled the Stone Away.

Resurrection was written at the request of Chicago-based Mark Ridenour.

The French flautist Eugene Damaré was a prolific composer of virtuoso showpieces for his instrument. Two of the best known, Cleopatra and Pandora were adapted for cornet (possibly by William Rimmer) and are well established in the repertoire. Both became signature pieces for the famous Black Dyke Mills Band Principal Cornet player, james Shepherd, who held the position for over a decade into the early l970s. This work is an adaptation of Eugene Damare's polka Le Merle Blanc (Op. l6l) and also incorporates an original slow introduction together with other stylistically period-appropriate material.

Damaré was written for Black Dyke's current Principal Cornetist Richard Marshall.

Harry James made his Paramount Theater (NYC) debut with Benny Goodman's band in I937 and by all accounts took the venue by storm. His characteristic jazz and classical crossover adaptations (incorporating virtuoso cornet solo techniques he acquired in his youth) captured the imagination of the public (and Hollywood). quickly propelling him to household fame. Paramount Rhapsody pays tribute to this legendary performer. The music roughly follows the Harry James Trumpet Concerto in form, the content incorporating the popular classic In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg.

Paramount Rhapsody was written for and recorded by Philip Cobb on the Naxos album Metropolis I927.

Gramercy Tenor Horn Album

l am delighted to present this collection of solos for Tenor Horn, part of a series of albums planned for brass instruments including Euphonium, Trombone and Cornet The solos are for advanced (and in some cases virtuoso) players in mind and although designed for Tenor Horn most of the pieces are suitable for any Eb instrument.

DELIVERANCE is the fourth movement of my suite War of the Worlds which was commissioned by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Saxophone Orchestra and first performed by them in the Maeda Hall, Japan on June 29 20 I 2, the composer conducting. The music is dedicated to Professor Shin-ichi lwamoto.

The suite takes inspiration from the I953 film script adaptation of the famous HG Wells novel and key scenes from the film are set as individual movements. The scene set for mvt 4 finds survivors seeking sanctuary in the Church of Santa Maria, still standing among the burning ruins of Los Angeles, and praying for Deliverance from the invaders.

ENCORE is based upon the study Spinnlied by David Popper (I843-l9l3) who is best remembered as a prolific composer of cello music. The string techniques exploited in the original study have been replaced by those regularly encountered by advanced brass players, with double-tonguing front and centre.

Jules Verne's I864 novel journey to the Centre of the Earth takes the form of a sequence of diary entries by Axel, nephew of explorer Professor Otto Lidenbrock, as they undertake "hair-breadth ‘scapes and ventures perilous" in a vast interior world.

SOLILOQUY reflects on a key scene of the book; Axel’s despair as he becomes separated and is lost in the labyrinth.

Gramercy Euphonium Album

I am delighted to present this collection of solos for Euphonium, the first in a series of albums, with Cornet/Trumpet, Tenor Horn and Trombone to follow.

The solos are for advanced (and in some cases virtuoso) players in mind and include solo adaptations of two of Gramercy Music's most requested titles, together with two titles taken from “classical” literature.

The Fantasy on Sempre Libera looks back with affection to the |9th century, a period when the great instrumental virtuosi reined supreme. Pianists Liszt and -Thalberg and violinists Paganini and Saraste amazed audiences with their wide- ranging technical and artistic abilities, fuelled by increasingly difficult paraphrases and variations on popular tunes of the day. This pastiche of the style was arranged for David Thornton who recorded the work with the Brighouse & Rastrick Band.

A MINSTREL BOY features the ballad of the same name and the jig Tossing the Feathers, both extracted from my Celtic celebration Gaelforce. The adaptation was made a number of years ago for a recording by David Childs and the Cory Band.

ENCORE is based upon the study Spinnlied by David Popper (I843-l9l3) who is best remembered as a prolific composer of cello music. The string techniques exploited in the original study have been replaced by those regularly encountered by advanced brass players, with double-tonguing front and centre.

ARIA - Solo for Eb.Horn & Piano accomp.
Available £24.95

Category: SOLOS for E♭. Horn
Composer: Philip Sparke

Duration 6.05

Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The band takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. A cornet then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close. A fantastic new addition to the solo repertoire for this much neglected solo instrument.

If you enjoyed listening to this audio extract, you can buy the full performance CD on this website. The CD is "KALEIDOSCOPE" with Foden's Richardson Band conducted by Richard Evans - The Tenor Horn Soloist is Leah Williams.

This spectacular three-part concerto

01.Contrasti,
02.Romanza and
03.Fugato
for euphonium and grand brass-band orchestra by Bert Appermont was composed upon request by the Swiss euphonium virtuoso Ueli Kipfer who created it in November 2004 with the Schweizer Armee Spiel conducted by Jan Cober. The composer was inspired more by its mood than the analysis of works by Mahler and Rachmaninov. This concerto, which is quite demanding for the soloist and a challenge for the orchestra, is probably one of the most innovative works by Bert Appermont to date. The composer also wrote an easier version of the solo part.
