This version for brass band was made for the Black Dyke Band, Music Director Nicholas Childs, and premiered by them during the Gramercy Music 10th Anniversary Concert in the Maxwell Hall University of Salford, on May 7 2004.
The Red Machine was commissioned by the London based Band of the Coldstream Guards. Among the band's duties is the famous changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace where their reputation for precision marching has led to them being described as the "Red Machine".
The music reflects the title and heritage of this fine group from the agressive machine-type music of the opening, the contrasting nostalgic French-flavoured waltz through the recapitulation and vivace finale. Listeners may hear references to music associated with the band, from Holst (the Planets) through the opening phrase of the chorale Ein Feste Burg - familiar to British Guards Bands from the troop mach Huguenots.

In 1973 the James Shepherd Versatile Brass was formed and Elgar Howarth was asked to write a piece for them to perform at a Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert, following the National Brass Band Championships.
Connecting Jim's surname with the well-known saying, ‘red sky at night, shepherd’s delight’, he found his title "Red Sky at Night".

Red Vest Man was composed as a dedication to cornet player Buddy Bolden, one of the first jazz musicians. He was reputed to always perform wearing a red vest. The piece is a New Orleans funeral march, something Bolden would have been called to do many times in his career. It starts with a slow mournful march, featuring solos from trumpet and trombone and finishes with a joyful 2nd line New Orleans rhythm.
Percussion: 3 Players playing side drum, bass drum, tambourine and crash cymbals
