IN THE BLEAK MID WINTER - Horn Solo - Parts & Score
Available £24.95

Categories: SOLOS for E♭. Horn, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Gustav Holst
Arranger: Rodney Newton

Christina Rosetti (1830-1894) came from a distinguished literary background and wrote the words to this popular carol in response to a request from a magazine called 'Scribner's Monthly'.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) wrote his hymn tune 'Cranham' in 1906 and this is one of the two melodies to which Christina Rosetti's words are usually sung (the other being by Harold Darke).

This arrangement was made for Owen Farr with the Buy As You View Band and was recorded by the same performers on The Wonder of Christmas (AMS078).

FIVE PORTRAITS from MIDDLE EARTH - Euphonium & Piano
Available £24.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - Euphonium
Composer: Rodney Newton

Durantio 10.30

These five pieces depict characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's celebrated trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, which made a great and lasting impact upon the composer from the time when he first read the books as a teenager, living opposite Sarehole Mill, the model for Tolkien's own ‘Hobbiton Mill', on the banks of the River Cole in a leafy suburb of Birmingham.

I Gandalf

The benevolent wizard of Middle Earth is called by a number of names throughout the trilogy. Here he is seen casting spells to ward off the encroaching darkness, with a central section depicting him riding his fabulous horse, Shadowfax.

II Gollum

One of the nastiest and most dangerous characters in the saga, Gollum's vicious nature is evident in his spiteful music, punctuated by the gulping sounds he makes which give him his name. A central, slower episode is marked ‘as if wheedling or insinuating'.

III Bilbo Baggins

A country gentleman at heart, Bilbo the hobbit shares a love of life, comfort and good food with the rest of his race. His fussy demeanour hides a courageous heart and a noble spirit.

IV Balrog !

A malevolent entity from the dawn of time, the Balrog is described as a creature "of shadow and fire". Terrifying to behold, these creatures serve Morgoth, the evil god of Middle Earth.

V Tom Bombadil

J.R.R. Tolkien explained that the character of Tom Bombadil represented ‘the vanishing spirit of rural England'. Strikingly dressed in a blue jacket, yellow boots and a hat with a feather stuck in its brim, the quirky Tom lives an idyllic life and embodies a happy world of lost innocence.

LOGIE O' BUCHAN - Bb. Trumpet with Piano accomp/
Available £7.50

Categories: Michael Bennett Collection, SOLOS - B♭. Cornet/Trumpet with Piano, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: George Halket
Arranger: Michael Bennett

Logie o’Buchan is a well known North East of Scotland Ballad composed around 1736 by George Halket a well known Jacobite.

The song has been covered and recorded by many folk singers and musicians from all over the world. The Logie mentioned is situated in Crimond although there are many places called Logie in the North East.

The hero of the song was James Robertson who was the gardener at the Mansion of Logie in Crimond. It was also in Crimond where Jessie Seymour Irvine composed the melody to Psalm 23, The Lord’s My Shepherd, which is now known all over the world as Crimond. Crimond is also where as a child I spent many a happy summer holiday as my granda and granny ran the local shop and post office.

This arrangement for trumpet/cornet and piano takes the form of an air and variations.

TRIP THE LIGHT FANTASTIC - Eb. Horn Solo with piano
Available £14.95

Category: SOLOS for E♭. Horn
Composer: Dan Price

As featured by Owen Farr on the CD "A NEW DAWN"

Duration 5.19

Horn virtuoso Owen Farr commissioned a new concert item for tenor horn from composer Dan Price in 2009, Trip the Light Fantastic was the resulting work.

The piece is music absolute, with no particular aim to tell a story or impose and image or idea on the listener. For anyone who knows Owen, they will know that he has an infectious and engaging presence and a lively sense of humour. His technical and musical ability is universally renowned, as is his enthusiasm and passion for music. The composer has attempted to create a musical caricature of some of these personal qualities and has borrowed the dancing term ‘to trip the light fantastic', "to dance nimbly or lightly, or to move in a pattern to musical accompaniment" as a fitting title to encompass the virtuosic yet jovial nature of the piece.

CLOUDS - Trombone Solo with Piano Accomp.
Available £24.95

Categories: SOLOS - Trombone, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Anthony Ritchie

The starting point for this point was some dramatic cloud formations I experienced while in Morrinsville, New Zealand.  It was a brilliant sunny day, with occasional huge and interestingly shaped clouds floating past.  They provided inspiration for the opening texture of my piece Clouds, which is flowing and slowly unfolding in charecter.

Clouds can assume many different shapes and charecters, which is reflected in my work.  There are stormy ideas with strong rhythms, jagged ideas built from small motifs, mysterious ideas that suggest darker clouds and bright climaxes that suggest the sun bursting through.

The solo trombone is rather like a small aeroplane, weaving its way through the cloudsand enjoying a turbulent journey.  Its part is soloistic but also integrated into the overall band texture and often under pinned by the percussion, who have an important role in sustaining the momentum for the piece.

Clouds was commissioned by trombonist Dave Bremner, for performance with the New Zealand National Brass Band in the 2005 World Brass Band Championships, in the Netherlands.

AULD LANG SYNE - Euphonium Solo with piano
Available £14.95

Category: SOLOS - Euphonium
Composer: Simone Mantia
Arranger: Peter Meechan

Euphonium Solo -
This solo was originally composed and made famous in the early 1900s by Simone Mantia, the same man responsible for the popular variations on 'Believe me if all those endearing young charms'. Here the solo line is Mantia's original but the arranger has given the accompaniment a more modern treatment. The solo begins with a dashing introduction before the main theme is heard. A set of tricky variations then follow with a couple of cadenzas thrown in for good measure!
This arrangement was made at the request of Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke Band and first performed by David Thornton and Black Dyke Band at the National Brass Band Championships Gala Concert 2004.

IT TAKES TWO - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - Euphonium
Composer: Karl Jenkins

It Takes Two is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms.

It Takes Two, which would normally form the third movement of the concerto, is an improvisatory style for the soloist.  The music is in the form of a habanera style tango with the euphonium 'partnering' a number of instruments in the ensemble while 'breaking away' from time to time in rolling roulades.  A judicious use of multi-phonics rounds off the coda.

On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."

It Takes Two for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.

Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are available from Prima Vista Musikk. Orchestral and wind band versions are available from Boosey and Hawkes.

REELS and JIGS - Euphonium Solo - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Categories: SOLOS - Euphonium, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Darrol Barry

Reels and Jigs was composed by Darrol Barry especially for David Childs. The title alludes to the musical content of the work but, with tricky rhythms, florid finger work and extended passages in the high register, it is a far cry from a simple reel or jig! It is, however, a great deal of fun and has already proved popular with audiences.

Reels and Jigs can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (DOYCD214) on which the performers are David Childs and Cory Band.

YE BANKS AND BRAES - Euphonium Solo - Parts & Score
Available £24.95

Categories: SOLOS - Euphonium, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Scottish Traditional
Arranger: Rodney Newton

This melody is purported to have been written in 1788 by a Charles Miller who expressed a desire to compose an authentic Scots air. The words associated with the tune are by Robert Burns and tell the tale of a young woman who is spurned by her lover who leaves her alone to bring up their child.

This reflective arrangement for euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment was made at the request of David Childs.

Composer: Joel Collier

Duration 4.30

In 2017 I accepted a new job opportunity that required me to move halfway across the country. While it was an exciting opportunity, it meant leaving behind all the friends and colleagues I had grown to love.  A Simple Song was a way for me to express this bittersweet goodbye, both sad to leave people behind, yet hopeful of what was to come.  The premiere was given with The National Capital Band, where I had served as principal euphonium since 2011, less than a week before I left.  It is dedicated to those I left behind.
