The autograph of this fanfare is headed, ‘Written for the entrance of H.M. The Queen at the N.A.T.O. Parliamentarians’ Conference, London, June 1959.’ As the title implies, this was a high-powered international occasion celebrating the tenth anniversary of the creation of NATO, which was held in the imposing surroundings of Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminster. The piece is a mere 16 bars long, but even so has two tempo directions; its harmony is based on Walton’s favourite piled-up thirds, creating sevenths, ninths, and elevenths in profusion. Its abrupt but very effective modulation to end on a D major chord at the close was presumably made to provide a dominant pivot into the National Anthem (usually performed in G), though this is not stated in the score. The anthem was doubtless played in Westminster Hall on 5 June by the State Trumpeters who had performed the fanfare.

The atmosphere in a busy town park in the spring provided me with the inspiration for this piece. The style of this piece can be described as light music with baroque influences. These baroque influences directly point to the richly ornamental statues, which can be found in the park.

A Quiet Moment was written in memory of James Philip Krofta ( 1953-2206). It was commissioned by his family in recognition of his love of music and his dedication to teaching.
His family writes ; "Throughout James' musical career he taught, inspired and motivated thousands of students to attain exceptional levels of excellence in life as well as music. Latterly he was the Assistant Director of bands and the Director of Jazz studies at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His untimely death kept him from fulfilling his dream of becoming Marquette's next Director of Bands. He spent the majority of his thirty year career as a Director of bands at Kettle Moraine High School.
Perhaps one of the greatest moments of his career came when he conducted Philip Sparke's The Year of the Dragon. with that piece his Wind Symphony won the 1995 National adjudicators Invitational in st. Louis, Missouri. Through A Quiet Moment by Philip
