(Psalm 100)
Inspired by Psalm 100 and based on the hymn tune 'Praise my soul the King of Heaven', this is music of joy and exuberance, with James Curnow's very clear stamp of North American style.
The versatile Norwegian guitarist and composer Knut Reiersrud has worked with many different musicians and artists throught the years. What particularly caught my ear was his collaboration with organ player Iver Kleive and saxophone player/producer Bendik Hofseth.
Three tunes played by these fine musicians form the basis of my arrangement:
Hit me with your fingerpicks,
Tramp
The barber's pulse.
Puls (Pulse) premiered at Siddis Brass 2003 and was the last piece of the performance of Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag. It can be a quite daunting task to arrange or write a 'finisher', I think.
What I tried to do was: Use the Reiersrud material quite freely and make sort of a variation-type build up where key, meter and tempo changes all seek towards a big climax at the end. The arrangement features both soloists and sections of the band and includes some choreography that enhances the music.

The finale to 'An Irving Berlin Suite' tears up the carpet in full frantic flapper style. Except that the gramophone winds down and needs an urgent manual rewind, before a final glitch appears in the form of a stuck needle. If it is not one thing it is another!

Pyrotechnic Variations on 1812 was composed for Brass Band Schoonhoven, and used as part of their programme for Brass in Concert in November 2016.
‘Pyrotechnic Variations’ is a modern day twist on Tchaikovsky’s famous ‘1812’ Overture. A heraldic opening introduces some familiar themes, before leading into a frantic virtuosic passage (especially for euphonium!), where quotes can be heard all through the band. This subsides into the central ‘slow’ section (via the unusual route of a bass and drum kit feature). After a whisper quiet reintroduction of the main theme, we build to the ‘canon’ finale – ending in a glorious celebratory style!

This moving piece of music, composed by the British composer Patrick Hawes, was featured on Hayley Westenra's album 'Odyssey'. The words "Quanta Qualia" translate to "How great & how wonderful". Now, scored for brass band by David Holling, a quintet (2 cornets, Horn, Baritone & Euphonium) lead the band throughout this stunning piece that brings a sense of tranquility to your concerts. This is the perfect item for those reflective, tender moments within your concert program that every band should have in their repertoire.
