French composer Gabriel Fauré composed his Pavane in 1887. Initially it was scored for voices with piano accompaniment but Fauré quickly reworked the piece for small orchestra, optional voices, and also allowed a provision for dancers. Here an abridged version of the original has been transcribed for brass band by Dan Price and will bring a welcome touch of the classics to any concert program.

Howard Snell writes: The first of Ravel's compositions to achieve success, the effect the composer intended is light and flowing, not, as Ravel once complained, "a dead pavane for a princess". For those interested in these things, the word "dead" of the title is a mistranslation. The French word here is "défuncte" which can, as in English mean "dead", but in this particlar context means "of a former time". "Pavane for a Princess of an Ancient Time" is much more accurate. No more corpses, please !

(Pavane pour une Infante Défunte) Cool, seductive and sophisticated, this little masterpiece has a very confusing title. “Infante” means a Spanish Princess: here Ravel imagines one from former times dancing a stately Pavane. So she is neither an infant or dead. Ravel is quoted saying “Neither is it a Dead Pavane,” when he heard it played too slowly! (This is a new edition of the existing arrangement.)

A sequel to the much loved hymn arrangement 'In Perfect Peace', this gorgeous lyrical work can create a beautiful atmosphere for the quieter moments of your concert.
Peacemakers was composed for Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. It received its world premiere on November 17th 2014 at The Sage and concluded their winning ‘Brass in Concert' program, ‘Lest We Forget'.
As well as commemorating the centenary of World War I, 2014 also marked the 75th Anniversary of the outbreak of Word War II. Dan Price's Peacemakers pays tribute to those who fought, and uses two contrasting musical ideas as its basis. The motifs and material for the first theme take inspiration from Morse code patterns, and as the work nears a triumphant close the allied forces of World War II are remembered through the words of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill broadcast on 20th August 1940. This speech can be narrated.
